Procrastination and What it Means to Me

By: Anastasia Shearer

Procrastination is when someone puts off doing something that’s not due for a long time. It can happen at any time and at any age. For example, I am a huge procrastinator when it comes to long term assignments, and I usually cram the homework that’s due at the very last minute usually making the assignment bad and ungradable. That is why I am trying to get better at doing my long term assignments during the time they were assigned.

Whenever I procrastinate, there is a mental voice that tells me to do something other than homework. Afterwards, I usually feel guilty because I didn’t do my homework and I usually spend my time doing nothing. It’s annoying having this mental cycle go on and on, making my life miserable. The good thing is, is that you can always reverse the effects of procrastination. Usually what I do when I want to procrastinate is I tell myself “Do your homework before you play on the switch/take a nap, you’ll feel better afterwards, trust me” and it usually works though i still have trouble with it.

In conclusion, procrastination is when you put off work that is not due for a long time. Procrastination can lead to panic attacks, and many other mental illnesses. The good thing is that procrastination can be helped. There are many ways of dealing with procrastination, one of which is telling yourself to stop, and to think about doing something before you do it.

8th Grade High Schools

By: Austin and Emma

Over the course of this school year, the 8th graders of St. Anne have been busy applying to high schools and preparing for their future. Notably, the students have received their high school acceptance letters recently and have decided on the high schools they would attend for the next four years (private school decisions came on the 19th while public school decisions came around the 22nd - via March). Wherever students went, many factors have influenced their decisions (scholarships, finances, personal favorites, friends, location, etc.). Despite not everyone responding or willing to disclose their decisions from the form we sent out, we have seen a very diverse number of schools in the bunch.

The most common school that students chose to attend was St. Ignatius (SI), with an estimated half of everyone going there. Others either went to other private schools (Urban, Convent, University High, Summit Shasta, Sacred Heart, Riordan, etc.) or took the public high school they were assigned in the lottery (even Lowell is now part of the lottery system). After the acceptances, students will ultimately prepare to finish off the year here and complete any remaining work or class placement testing before becoming freshmen in August. (Tip: Just because you’ve gotten into a highschool, doesn’t mean it’s time to slack on your grades.) Leaving the school will be bittersweet for many, as it can be sad to leave a school and community you’ve been comfortable or used to for years, but at the same time, everyone will gain new opportunities and experiences. This year has been a rollercoaster of confusion for many here at St. Annes. Many of us may miss hanging out with our friends, or going/eating outside without the disturbance of a mask. Whatever the case, we should all know that the purpose of St. Annes is to create memories that will stay with us for a lifetime, regardless if you graduate this year, next year, or two years from now, etc. Memories are the most important, and your choice of high school doesn't define who you are as a person. Being yourself is what matters.

Animation

By Mikayla Cheng

Animating is a hobby that can be very enjoyable! You can use your creativity to animate different things. For those who don’t know what animation is, it is the process of manipulating pictures to move. Animating is one of my hobbies, and I enjoy it very much! I will be sharing with you some apps that I think would be great for those who find interest in animating!

First of all, how did animating come to be, and when did it start? Well, animation was first founded in 1908 by J. Stuart Blackton, who created a series of animated films. Of course, this was an early animation. Up until today, animation has grown and evolved, especially with new technology.
Did you know that animating can be a career? There are about 67,500 people working as animators according to a record in 2019. It is expected that by 2029 there will be about 70,300 people working in animation. The demand for animators is also increasing. Animation isn’t that popular of a career, and unfortunately the salary is quite low. However, animating can still be a fun hobby!

If anyone reading this might be interested in animation now or have been for a longer period of time, I strongly encourage you to at least try it out. Although, it is really time-consuming, and therefore it will be an activity that will take up a lot of your time. And it isn’t easy. Animation can be very difficult, because you would have to draw every frame of your project. Although, I’d definitely say it’s worth it. If you put a lot of effort and creativity into it, it’ll probably turn out satisfactory in the end.

Apophis: The Serpent of Chaos

By: Joshua Lee

In Egyptian mythology, there is order, and there is chaos. The two forces battle each other day and night. Ra, the sun deity, leads the forces of Ma’at against Chaos, fighting against his mortal enemy, Apophis. He is named “The Lord of Chaos” and is a giant serpent, massive enough to cover the sun from view. With crimson red eyes and pale golden scales, it strikes fear in the hearts of mortals and even gods.

Every day, he attacks the sun boat of Ra, hoping to erase his existence. The most powerful gods and goddesses protected the king of Ma'at and killed him during the journey of renewing the cycle. But no matter how many times he was defeated, he spawned and regenerated the next day to strike once again. Trapped in a vicious cycle of conflict, it will never end unless one side ceases to exist.

The origin of Apophis is confusing and told in many diverse ways. This version portrays the world before order existed. Apophis swam in a dark sea of everlasting and endless chaos. But then, order rose from the depths of the ocean and creation began. Apophis despised it and wanted to just bathe in chaos forever. He became the adversary of the sun god because the first thing to rise from creation was the sun. It symbolized order, divinity, and harmony. Legends say that if Apophis gets powerful enough to devour the sun god, order will collapse and chaos will forever last unparalleled. Let's hope the myths and tales stay as fabrications.

Mean Girls:  Summary and Book Review & Woman's History Month

By Valeria Fuentes

16-year old, Cady Heron, has lived in Africa her whole life. Then her parents announced that they were going to move to America. Cady was not hesitant to agree on moving. She was super excited. On her first day at Northshore high, met a girl named Janice, who is emo, and Damien who is energetic. One day, when Cady was walking over in the cafeteria, the “Plastics' ', who were the most three popular girls in the school, told her to come to sit with them. Cady was about to reject their invite and head over to Janice and Damien’s table, but when she was going to reject, Janice gestured to her to accept it. In the end, Cady accepted their invitation to sit with them. The first girl, Regina George, was the queen of high school, she is manipulative and can get whatever she wants. Gretchen Wieners, who knows every person's secret and tells them to Regina and ruins their life. Lastly, there is Karen Smith, who is a very clueless person and doesn’t even know what’s going on most of the time. As Cady sits with them, they learn more about her and invite her to go shopping. After school, Janice asked Cady many questions about her conversations. Cady asked why she was asking so many questions, Janice, ignored it. Janice told Cady to hang out with them more. Cady, clueless about all the mess she would cause agreed. When Cady entered math class, a boy named Aaron Samuels sat behind her. Cady fell head over heels for him immediately. She was in 12th-grade calculus math, even though she was a junior, she is extremely good at math. As she got closer to the Plastics, Aaron, and Damien, she learned more about their past, the Plastics had a book called The Burn Book, which was a book that made mean remarks to all their classmates, Janice and Regina used to be friends, and Regina and Aaron used to date. A couple of weeks later, Aaron invited Cady to his Halloween party. Cady went to the Halloween party dressed up like a five-year-old clueless about how high schoolers dress. At the party, Regina kissed Aaron on purpose. Regina knew about Cady's crush on him. This made Cady so devastated that she ran to Janice and Damien. They decided to take revenge on her by taking her main sources of power like Aaron, her boyfriend, her friends, and her good looks. The plan had many mean pranks. Cady was supposed to give her Kalteen bars to lose weight, even though the bars would make her gain more. The plan that they had worked so well, Regina was no longer the queen of high school, Cady now was. Regina, so mad at Cady, decided to turn The Burn book on her. Regina told the principal that Cady was the one who wrote in it and Regina found it on the floor. Regina also threw copies from The Burn Book all over the school hallways. This caused every girl to fight with each other and it created havoc. This caused many people to hate Cady. At the Spring Fling dance, Cady was crowned queen. Cady made a speech apologizing for all the problems she caused. She broke the crown into pieces she received and gave it to all the girls. She said that they shouldn’t lose their true colors just to fit in and to be kind to one another. Cady learned that she should never lose her individuality just to fit in. Overall, I really liked this book and would recommend it to anybody who’s into teen comedy.

Origins and Fun Facts of St. Patrick’s Day

By: Christina Chew

With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, people are preparing for the popular holiday. They could be putting green decorations up or picking out a green outfit to wear. It will take place on Wednesday, March 17. Do you know when St. Patrick’s Day started? Or why do we need to wear green on that day? I am sure many people, including me, don’t know the original story about St. Patrick’s Day. Let me tell you the origins of St. Patrick’s Day. It is truly a fascinating story about the public holiday we all know and celebrate today.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on the feast day of a particular saint. It started in the 17th century as a remembrance of the life of a particular person whom the holiday is named after: Maewyn Succat. He was not originally named Patrick. He simply changed his name to Patricius, or Patrick, when he joined the priesthood. Patricius, the original Latin form of Patrick, means “father figure.” The historic man was not Irish, contrary to popular belief. He was actually born in Britain from a Romanized family. When he was in his teens, he was taken away by Irish raiders from his father’s villa. He was brought to Ireland and worked for six years as a herdsman. During those years, he turned to his faith of God. When he finally was able to escape, he ran away from his master and traveled back to his family in Britain. While he was traveling back, he was close to suffering from starvation. He also was close to being captured again. After a bit of time, he decided to go back to Ireland because of a letter given to him in a dream. When he reached Ireland, he was baptizing and confirming people, utterly confident in the Lord. At least once, he was chained up. After 40 years of working tirelessly and living in poverty, he died on March 17. He showed several acts of faith in God during his life. Therefore, the legendary life of Saint Patrick is remembered every St. Patrick’s Day.

Why do we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, though? And also, why do people pinch each other on that day?  Turns out, green is worn on that day because it was the color associated with Ireland, also called the Emerald Isle. In addition, one belief why green is the color of Ireland is dated back to the Irish Rebellion of 1798. During the rebellion, the Irish wore green uniforms while the British soldiers wore red. After the rebellion, people started wearing green to show their Irish pride as a sign of unity and agreement with the revolution. Also, the green on the Irish flag had long represented the Catholics in Ireland. St. Patrick himself was thought to teach people about the Holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, using green shamrocks. As a result, green is therefore associated with Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day. As for why you will get pinched if you don’t wear green on that day, one reason is since St. Patrick’s Day is about displaying pride in their Irish heritage, the pinching acts as a form of encouragement for people to be bold about their Irishness. Another reason has to do with the leprechauns. Rumor has it that these mischievous mythical creatures like to sneak up on people and pinch them. However, people believed that wearing green would make them invisible to the little creatures. Thus, people pinch others who don’t wear green as a reminder that the leprechauns could sneak up on them anytime. As a result, the tradition of wear-green-or-be-pinched started. I hope this article gives you more information and understanding about one of the most celebrated holidays in the world, St. Patrick’s Day. Don’t forget to wear green on March 17, or you may risk being pinched!

The Mystery of Lacaux: Part 6

By: Hazel Buckingham

Eustice groaned in pain which surprised Carl and Daniel because they were just battered up a bit.

“What is it?” asked Carl.

“I got stuck in a weird position when we landed. I think I broke my leg when we crashed into the water.. ughhh.”Eustice replied with a heave.

Daniel and Carl quickly helped him back on the plane.

“Do either of you even know anything about medicine?”Eustace asked.

“Ughh noooo…” Daniel and Carl said simultaneously.

“Didn’t we have like a first aid class a while ago? Telling the truth I didn’t pay attention, but I think we need to make a splint.”Carl said.

“Oh yeah! I didn’t pay much attention either. That class was really boring, but I think I can remember something about the splint.” said Daniel.

“I didn’t look closely at the mediciny things they have but I’m pretty sure there’s some medical tape and bandages,” said Carl.

“Yeah I’ll check,” said Daniel.

Daniel grabbed one of the bags and picked out the tape and bandages. He saw that they were missing the sickle Although he never understood why they needed a sickle (they were going on an expedition not starting a farm) he still thought that the more supplies they had the better.

“Daniel, have you got the stuff?” Carl asked.

“Ughh yeah. I think the sickle fell out when Eustice was making the parachute thingy.” Daniel replied.

“Yeah, I was making the parachute thingy that just saved your butts,” Eustice said.

“Eh, what was the sickle for any way we’re not going to start a settlement,” Carl said.

“Either way we should try to fix Eustice’s leg now,” Daniel said.

And with that, they got started. Hours later they had finished. Eustice’s leg now looked like it had been covered with a destroyed pillowcase.

Ruby

By: Zaara Dhaddey

“Mom, I’ll be fine.”

“Ruby Bridges, I am not letting you go to school without a shield or some kind of protection. You saw what happened at William Frantz Elementary School. You don’t know what these kids will do to you.”

Ruby knew it was serious when her mom calls her by her full name so she replied with, “Okay, okay, mom I will,” she picked up a really thick jacket and put it on, “this should be enough” she continued, “it’s different now mom, I’m in 6th grade and we are at a different school.”

“I don’t know Ruby, but go and have a good first day of school,” her mom, sounding quite worried took a deep breath in.

“Don’t worry mom,” Ruby chuckled, “I survived William Frantz. I'll be fine. I’ll see you soon,” and Ruby left her house.

As she walked to school she wondered what her first day of school would be like. But, she was jubilant and couldn’t wait to see. Ruby wasn’t the type to worry, as she thought she’d had seen almost anything. She’s been through more things at twelve as many people have in a lifetime.

As Ruby walked up the school steps, she took a deep breath, “here we go, again.”

Ruby walked to her homeroom classroom. Her homeroom teacher was wearing a hijab, which was strange to Ruby as they were in the south in 1966.

“Hello Ruby,” her teacher said, “everyone please welcome our new student Ruby Bridges.”

The class looked at her in awe, as they had been taught what she did in the previous year of school.

“I am Ms. Yousafzai, Malala Yousafzai, or Ms. Y for short.”

Then suddenly the whole class disappeared. Everyone except Ms. Y and Ruby who was sitting in her seat in the back row.

“Ruby,” Malala said, “in the future, when I’m fifteen I will be shot by the Taliban on my way to school.”

Ruby looked alarmed.

“Don’t worry I survive, but the most important part is that I stood up against the Taliban and Pakistan and fought for my and all female rights to go to school.”

“What do you mean fifteen, how do you know?” Ruby looked up at Malala confused.

“Don’t worry about it, you’ll see. My point is education and sexism should have no correlation, yet they do, especially in the future in third world countries. When you see something that isn’t right or unfair, pick your fights but when needed you should fight. But only peacefully.”

“Fight,” Ruby repeated quietly.

Suddenly everyone was back in the classroom, “Ruby? Ruby?” Ruby looked up to see Malala standing over her, “are you okay?”

“I- I- don’t know,” Ruby said dazed, “May I go to the nurse’s office?”

“Yes, I think that would be for the best, run along now.” Malala pretended not to notice what had just happened.

As Ruby walked down the hallway, she wondered what had just happened. As she walked into the Nurse’s office she saw another girl, seventeen or eighteen maybe. The girl gave her a smile. She must have been part of the high school.

“I’ve been waiting for the nurse too, I don’t know where she went,” she said in a thick Swedish accent. It startled Ruby, she had never really expected someone from Europe to be at their school.

“You’re not from here are you?” Ruby asked.

“Nope, I’m from Sweden. I’m Greta, Great Thunberg.”

“Wow! That’s insane, I’m Ruby, Ruby Bridges.”

“I learned about you in school,” suddenly everyone else in the office disappeared.

“Not this again,” Ruby hissed, “I think I need some medicine or something.”

“You don’t, believe me,” Greta countered and then continued, “At a young age I took charge in Sweden and started pursuing and challenging world leaders in their acts of climate change. Climate change is real and important. I’m only eighteen now. My point is that you can make a difference by doing the little things, I started by just simply holding up a sign. I start making a difference in the late 2010s and early 2020s, keep a lookout.” Greta winked and then everyone appeared back in the room.

“You know what, I’m feeling better,” Greta started and then left.

Just as she left a couple of more kids came in, and then the nurse, finally.

“So what seems to be the problem?” The nurse asked.

“I- I don’t really know, I seem to be seeing things,” Ruby stuttered.

“I see. Oh I forgot to introduce myself, how rude of me. I’m Gloria Steinem, but please call me Gloria. Anything else makes me feel old. Anyways, any nausea or chills?”

“Oh I don’t mind,” Ruby began, “I’m Ruby, Ruby Bridges. And no, I feel completely fine, which is why I’m very confused right now.”

“Oh my god. Ruby Bridges!” Gloria exclaimed. Then suddenly once again everyone else disappeared. “You're not seeing things.”

“So you’re from the future too?” Ruby sighed.

“You’re a smart one, you are, this will be over soon.”

Ruby wondered what that meant “this will be over soon.”

“So what are you going to do? Or what did you do?” Ruby asked curiously.

“Well women were always told that they couldn’t. See I wanted to change that, so I protested. I ended co-founding Ms. Magazine with my dear friend Dorothy Pitman Hughes in 1971. I also ended up winning the Nobel Peace Prize 2013.”

“Wow you are going to do a lot!” Ruby rejoiced.

“Well it didn’t look like that for a while. I grew up in a trailer with a very difficult family situation. When I was ten, my mom became very depressed because we constantly had to move. So, my dad left us and my sister and I had to take care of my mom. So, no matter what background you come from, you can always make a difference. Yes, it may be harder but you always can.”

Then everyone appeared back into the room.

“Ruby are you okay?” Gloria asked, “Maybe you should head home.” Once again pretending for the other kids in the room, not to know what had just happened.

“I think that would be good, I can get myself home alright. Thank you for your words.”

Gloria looked confused but wished Ruby goodbye. Then she walked to exit the school, before she left Malala and Greta came out. They also wished her goodbye.

“Good bye, thank you so much for your amazing words. You are going to inspire so many people in the future,” Ruby beamed.

“Like you’ve already done, and will continue to,” Malala hollered.

“See you in the future,” Ruby waved.

As Ruby walked out of the school, she woke up. She was in her bed, her mom standing over her.

“It’s the first day of school Ruby you better get ready. Maybe I should drive you, I don’t like this, it’s not very diverse Ruby. Maybe we should have picked the other school.”

“Mom, I’ll be fine.”

3 Stories of Trailblazing Women

By: Claire Wallerstein, Ella Gorospe, and Kate Spertzel

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross, was born into slavery in Maryland. In the times of slavery, birthdates were not recorded for slaves. We know that she was born around 1820, though. At the young age of seven, she was rented out like a piece of property. She had to first watch a baby day and night, getting whipped if it cried. Then, she was rented out to check muskrat traps in a freezing river.

When she was 12, an event changed her life forever. She saw a slave running away to freedom, and a man about to throw a weight at the man. She stepped in front of him, but the weight struck her. It cracked her skull, and for the rest of her life she would fall asleep at random intervals and claimed to have visions about running to freedom. She then changed her name to Harriet, to honor her mother.

Later on, she learned her mother and all her children, including Harriet herself, were to be set free. Unfortunately, her new owner ignored the will that by law should have set her free. When she learned that her brothers were going to be sold, she ran away. But, the brothers turned around and went home. Harriet, through sheer determination, arrived in Pennsylvania. Harriet being in Pennsylvania set her free. She hated being free while her family were still slaves, so like Moses, she went back. She saved them, and continued to save them, even after the fugitive slave act. This act made it more difficult, so she had to bring the escapees all the way to Canada in order for them to be safe.

When the Civil War started, she worked as a spy, now in much more dangerous conditions, but she still freed slaves. She died peacefully in New York. It took the government a long time to recognize her achievements, and now she might even replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. We must remember her hard work that changed the lives of so many people.

Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr was known as ''The Most Beautiful Woman in Film'', but she was so much more than that. Hedy was born in Vienna, Austria on November 9, 1914 as Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler. Hedy began as an actress when she was only 17 and starred in many German and Czechoslavakian films that caught the attention of Hollywood producers years later. She changed her name to Hedy Lamarr after she started her acting career in America and became extremely popular. Hedy starred in many movies and had an amazing 28-year career as an actress from 1930 to 1958. Although she was an amazing actress, this is not the only reason she is an influence, especially to this day in age.

In addition to being a talented actress, Hedy Lamarr was also an extraordinarily intelligent genius. Along with the help of George Antheil, a brilliant avant-garde piano composer, they created the “Secret Communication System”. George and Hedy didn’t want to just sit around during World War II so they invented it to try to keep Nazis from intercepting coded messages while sending them to other Allies. In order to do this, they created the first “frequency hopping” invention that could disguise radio transmissions, the basis of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and other wireless technologies!

Unfortunately, the U.S. Navy denied her inventions, most likely because she was “The Most Beautiful Woman in Film”. Hedy and George got their invention patent in August, 1942 but the National Inventors’ Council dismissed their new technology and her attempts to lend some of her knowledge about war telecommunications to the U.S. military. Even when she was told to only be an actress, she never stopped inventing. Hedy’s work influenced wireless technology which is trailblazing for other inventors. Hedy Lamarr was an astounding actress, and she also paved the way for new technologies that are extremely important today and changed the world forever.

Claudette Colvin

One day in Montgomery, Alabama a woman was jailed for not giving another seat on the bus. And no, her name was not Rosa Parks. Her name was Claudette Colvin. This happened on March 2, 1955 when she was only 15! That entire month they were learning about black leaders and injustices they were experiencing including not being able to eat at certain diners, not being able to try clothes and shoes on, not being able to drink at the same water fountains, etc. She states “It felt like Sojourner Truth was on one side of me pushing me down and Harriet Tubman was on the other side of me pushing me down. I couldn’t get up.” in an interview with NPR. Other woman did the same thing as Claudette but got fined, instead Claudette was arrested. After being told by the bus driver to leave her seat and she refused, the driver called the cops who handcuffed her and arrested her. The N.A.A.C.P. (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) received many letters from people saying how brave Claudette was. They then decided that they wanted to start a bus boycott, but felt that 15 year-old Claudette would not be a good face for the movement, because of her age, her skin tone, and the fact that she just found out she was pregnant and got kicked out of her high school. Ed Nickson - the president of their local N.A.A.C.P. office, thought that their secretary, Rosa Parks would be a good face. They also felt Rosa Parks would appeal to more people because she was older than Claudette. So, Rosa Parks sat in the white section of the bus on December 1st, 1955 and refused to get up. She had to pretend like she was just tired to make more people want to join the movement. Parks then was arrested making many people join the movement. One day a black lawyer named Fred Gray asked Claudette if she would be interested in helping him sue the city of Montgomery. She said yes and was the star witness in the case. They then won giving blacks more rights not only in Montgomery but all of Alabama too.

Later Claudette moved to New York to become a nurse. I believe all of us can learn from Claudette because she stood up for what's right and didn’t care if she got the credit. She just wanted her kids to be able to sit where they wanted to, eat where they felt like, and get the same education as white kids. Claudette is a very brave woman that we can all look up to.

Show Review: The Loud House

By: Jimmy Ng, Jr.

The Loud House is a Nickelodeon show that is recommended for kids seven years old and older. This show perfectly captures what a big family would feel like. Lincoln, the main character of this show, is the only boy in the family, with ten other sisters. He has his best friend by his side, Clyde. He has a massive crush on Lincoln’s oldest sister, and I mind as well talk about all the sisters in his family. First, there is Lily, 15 months old, the youngest sister in the family. She is a baby. When Lincoln is sad, she usually makes him feel better with one of her drawings. Next is Lisa. She is four years old. She is a very smart sister that helps with medicines and is just as smart as someone in college. She is more into smarts and learning to make new chemicals and isn’t very good socially. After Lisa, there are the two twins, Lola and Lana. They are complete opposites. Both at seven years old, they play a lot. Lola is elegant and likes fashion. Lana likes to get muddy and play with different animals. They might be complete opposites, but they somehow get along pretty well. Lucy follows them, an eight-year-old. She is a pretty dark character. She likes to watch romantic vampire shows. She sleeps in a coffin and has bats for pets.

Lynn, the sporty girl of the family. She likes to play every kind of sport. She has the word “FLIBBER” written on her arm. That indicates all the sports, and she wants to win a championship in each of these sports. At 13 years old, she likes to play many of these athletic games. Next is Luna, 15 years old, who likes to rock. She plays instruments, especially the guitar and plays all day long on volume 12. It can get pretty loud. She is in a band and is a pretty good singer too. Next will be Leni. She is 16 years old and surprisingly, isn’t the brightest of the bunch. She can be pretty forgetful and dumb. When she can’t figure out something pretty simple, she is dumbfounded! This is kind of ironic that the second oldest sister wouldn’t be smarter than Lisa, the second youngest in the family. Lory, the oldest sister, is one of those examples of teenagers that are always on their phones. She is 18 years old. She likes to always be on a call with Bobby, a teenager around her age. They are into each other romantically. Those are all of Lincoln’s sisters. I can’t imagine the chaos in that house every day!

Always Tomorrow

Sometimes we have those days.

Where everything falls down on us.

Sometimes we have those moments.

That makes us want to run and hide.

But whenever you feel bad, just think:
“There’s always tomorrow to try again.”

Sometimes things get tough.

And we never felt so helpless.

Sometimes we fall down.

And that there’s no point in trying again.

But there’s always tomorrow to try again.

Get up, brush yourself off.

You’ll be alright.

Poem Meaning: Whenever you have a bad day, just know that tomorrow you can try again and start anew. There’s always another chance that you can take. You’ll be okay.

Easter Traditions

By Annika Watkins

Easter symbols and rituals have evolved over the years, while others have been around for decades. Although Easter is a Christian celebration of Christ's resurrection, many Easter rituals are not found in the Bible. The Easter bunny, the most popular secular icon of the Christian holiday, was originally introduced to America by German immigrants who brought tales of an egg-laying hare with them. The tradition of decorating eggs dates back to at least the 13th century, and the Easter parade is even older. Some modern enhancements to the celebration of this early springtime holiday include the consumption of Easter sweets.

Despite the fact that there is no mention in the Bible of a long-eared, short-tailed creature who brings decorated eggs to well-behaved children on Easter Sunday, the Easter bunny has become a popular emblem of Christianity's most significant holiday. The exact origins of this legendary animal are unknown, but rabbits are an ancient sign of fertility and new life since they are prolific procreators. According to several accounts, the Easter bunny initially came to America throughout the 1700s with German immigrants who arrived in Pennsylvania and brought their tradition of an egg-laying hare known as "Osterhase" or "Oschter Haws" with them. Their children built nests for this creature to lay its colorful eggs in. The practice gradually spread throughout the United States, and the fabled rabbit's Easter morning deliveries grew to include chocolate and other forms of candy and presents, while decorated baskets replaced nests. Furthermore, children sometimes left carrots out for the bunny in case he became hungry from all his jumping.

While Easter is a religious event, some of its rituals, such as Easter eggs, are likely derived from pagan practices. The egg, an ancient emblem of new life, has traditionally been linked with religious spring festivals. Easter eggs are said to signify Jesus' release from the tomb and rebirth from a Christian perspective. According to some sources, the practice of decorating Easter eggs goes back to at least the 13th century. Eggs were once a prohibited food during the Lenten season, so people would design and customize them to celebrate the end of the time of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. Two common egg-related activities are Easter egg hunts and egg rolling. The White House Easter Egg Roll, a competition in which children drive painted, hard-boiled eggs around the White House lawn, is an annual tradition held on the Monday following Easter in the United States. The first formal White House egg roll took place in 1878, during the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes. The event has no religious meaning, but some people believe that egg rolling represents the rolling away of the stone that was blocking Jesus' tomb, leading to his resurrection.

After Halloween, Easter is the second most popular candy holiday in the United States. Chocolate eggs, which date back to early 19th century Europe, are among the most common sweet treats associated with this day. Eggs have long been associated with Easter as a sign of regeneration and the return of Jesus. The jelly bean, another egg-shaped candy, became synonymous with Easter in the 1930s (though the jelly bean's roots allegedly date all the way back to a Biblical-era concoction known as a Turkish Delight). According to the National Confectioners Association, over 16 billion jelly beans are produced in the United States each year for Easter, enough to fill an 89-foot-high by 60-foot-wide egg. For the past decade, the marshmallow Peep, a sugary, pastel-colored confection, has become the best-selling non-chocolate Easter treat. Just Born, a candy company based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania (founded in 1923 by Russian immigrant Sam Born), started selling Peeps in the 1950s. The initial Peeps were homemade, marshmallow-flavored yellow chicks, but other shapes and tastes, such as chocolate mousse bunnies, were later added.

The Easter Parade tradition in New York City goes back to the 1800s, when the social elite of society would join Easter place at different Fifth Avenue services and then walk outside to show off their new spring dresses and hats. Ordinary people began to crowd along Fifth Avenue to watch the action. By the mid-twentieth century, the tradition had peaked, and in 1948, the iconic film "Easter Parade," starring Fred Astaire and Judy Garland and starring Irving Berlin's soundtrack, was published. “In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills on it/You'll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade,” the title song says. The Easter Parade tradition lives on in Manhattan, with Fifth Avenue closed to traffic from 49th to 57th Streets during the day. Participants often wear ornately decorated bonnets and caps. The event has no religious meaning, but Easter processions have been a part of Christianity since its inception, according to sources. Other towns in America now have their own parades.

Lamb is a common Easter dish. Christians refer to Jesus as the "Lamb of God," though the Easter lamb has its origins in early Passover celebrations. According to the tale of Exodus, the Egyptians were subjected to a series of horrific plagues, including the death of all firstborn sons. Members of the Jewish faith decorated their doorposts with the blood of a sacrificed lamb in order for God to "pass over" their houses. Jews who converted to Christianity kept the Easter lamb-eating custom alive. Lamb was historically one of the first fresh meats available after a long winter with no livestock to slaughter.

White Easter Lilies are common decorations in churches and homes during the Easter season because they represent Christ's purity. Their transformation from dormant bulbs in the field to flowers represents the regeneration and hope of Christ's resurrection. Lilies are native to Japan and were introduced to England in 1777, but they made their way to the United States in the aftermath of World War I. They went on to become the unofficial flower of Easter celebrations throughout the United States.

April Fools Day

By: Cassandra Conde

It is almost April Fools’ Day! Do you have any tricks yet? Well, before you think of any tricks, let’s learn about this holiday's history.

April Fools’ Day is a holiday when people play practical jokes on each other. April Fools’ Day has been celebrated for many centuries by different cultures, but its exact origins still remain a mystery.

Some people believe that it started because of the tricks from a book made in 1392 called “The Canterbury Tales”. In one part of the book "The Nun's Priest's Tale," a fox tricks a proud rooster, on March thirty days and two, or Chauntecleer. Chaucer probably wanted the people to think that it meant 32 days after March (May 2), many readers evidently misunderstood the line and thought that it meant March 32, or April 1.

Others believe that April Fools' Day started in 1582. This is when France switched calendars from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. People who weren’t able to hear the news early or failed to notice that the start of the new year had moved to January 1, still continued to celebrate it during the last week of March. Which is through April 1. And so April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes.

Now tell me, are you ready to be fooled?

Languages Around The World

By Mikayla Cheng

There are around 7,000 languages that are spoken throughout the entire world. This seems like a lot, and truly, it is. There is a lot of history and information about all these languages. I’m going to tell you a bunch of facts about languages all over the world.

I’ll start off with the most popular languages. The first most popular language we have English. This is by far the most popular language in the world, with currently almost 1 billion English speakers. Around 360 million peoples’ first language is English. Coming in second, Mandarin Chinese is a language that almost 1 billion people speak. Although, it is a bit less than the number of English speakers. The third most spoken language in the world is Hindi, with around three hundred to four hundred million speakers. There are also other popular languages following the top three, such as Spanish and French.

Every language is exotic and beautiful in their own way. However, some are either less known, or completely forgotten. The most unpopular and rarest language in the whole world is called Njerep. There are only 4 unknown speakers in the world that speak Njerep. It’s sort of crazy that such a small amount of people communicate in this language. Sadly, the language might go extinct soon. Speaking of the verge of extinction, did you know that there are around 500 to 600 forgotten or extinct languages? They were simply no longer studied, therefore bygone. After reading this article, I hope you learned something about languages!

Empathy

By: Joshua Lee

A story of turning a new leaf. One who treated others with suspicion and doubt. And then again treated them with kindness and compassion. Enjoy.

The person was the queen of a clan, raised in a form of knowing that their tribe was the best and that others were untrustworthy and dangerous. One day, in her early years of ruling, her kingdom was flooded with refugees from other clans across the sea. She thought of them as enemies and went to her treasury to find her enchanted objects made by others. One of them she found was called “The Gift of Vision.” Thinking it to mean to improve eyesight, she put it on without examining further. After all, she was in a state of panic

As she went to meet the refugees, she traveled with them to send them somewhere safer and more relative to their original climate. Along and during the journey, she received visions in the form of dreams. The dreams put her in the perspective of another person each time, feeling as though she was actually them. Over time, she became more empathetic and caring, and it all turned out to be the ring’s spell. Leaving the refugees to themselves at their resting place, she went back to her territory to change the ways of her clan. And so, by placing herself in other people’s shoes, that helped her to become the caring person she is now.

Queen Elizabeth the First

 By  Valeria Fuentes

Queen Elizabeth the I was born on  September 7, 1533, in Greenwich, England. She was the daughter of  King Henry VII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. She had an older half-sister named Mary Tudor, who was the daughter of King Henry’s first wife. Queen Elizabeth also had a younger half-brother named Edward, who was the King's first son with his third wife, Jane Seymour. When Elizabeth was growing up, she received tutoring and did exceptionally well at languages and music. Her father died in 1547, her stepmother, Catherine Parr, took care of her. Parr employed tutors like William Grindal and Roger Ascham. When the king died, Edward took the throne. He was now King Edward VI and he reigned for six years. In 1553 he died.

Mary and her cousin Lady Grey Jane were both in line for the throne.  Edward selected Lady Grey to be the next successor. Lady Grey’s reign was only nine days, which was extremely short. This was because Mary got enough support from the English people and unseated Lady Grey. During Mary's reign, she changed the religion back to Roman Catholicism. Some people were angered about the change but they still went along with it, even Elizabeth. Elizabeth was now a candidate for the throne for the people who wanted to get their religion back, Protestantism. There was a rebellion, organized by Wyatt Thomson. He did this because he wanted Elizabeth to become queen. Mary was furious and imprisoned her half-sister Elizabeth. After she was released,  she went to Hatfield to carry on with her studies. When Mary died, Elizabeth took her place. She became the Queen of England and she had many different names like the Virgin Queen because she didn't get married. She was the Queen of England from November seventeenth, 1558 to March twenty-sixth, 1603.  She did many great things in her life like stopping the war between England and France. Her reign is sometimes called England's Golden Era. I learned from Queen Elizabeth the I not to let people underestimate you, because some people doubted her because she was a woman. Elizabeth proved them wrong by ending a big conflict between England and France.

Susan B. Anthony

By: Christina Chew

The wonderful month of March has many important holidays. Some are the start of Daylight Savings Time and St. Patrick’s Day. Out of all of them, there is an extremely important one that most people forget. It is celebrating a group of people who are often forgotten in the history books most of the time: women. March is Women’s History Month. There are so many remarkable women who have done many great things in the past. One of them is Susan B. Anthony. Some people might know her but others may not. So, who is she? What has she done? Why is she an important figure in history?

As I said before, Susan B. Anthony was a very influential person. She was born in Adams, Massachusetts on February 15, 1820. When she was little, she believed that everyone was equal under God. She fought for that belief for the rest of her life, and even her siblings became activists that fought for the emancipation of slaves. After she grew up, she spent several years teaching. When she returned back to her family in New York, she met William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass, who moved her to want to do more to help end slavery. Because of this, she became an abolition activist who made passionate speeches against slavery, even though some people thought it was improper for women to make speeches in public during that time. In 1851, Susan met Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who was a great leader of the women’s rights movement, and they became great friends. They traveled the country together, giving speeches demanding that women get the right to vote. Sometimes, Susan would get arrested for speaking about her ideas in public, yet she didn’t give up. In 1872, she was arrested for voting and fined $100, which made many people angry, and they paid more attention to the women's suffrage movement (the fight to win the right for women to vote). Susan B. Anthony led the National Women’s Suffrage Group until 1900. She did many things to fight for women’s rights, such as traveling around the country giving speeches, gathering signatures for petitions, and persuading Congress every year for women. 14 years after her death in 1906, the 19th Amendment was signed, giving women the right to vote.

Therefore, Susan B. Anthony was a really important person in history who contributed a lot to the women’s rights movement. She helped give women many rights, such as the right to vote and to earn the same amount of money as men. She also helped some slaves escape from their masters and abolish slavery. She helped give people equality. Without her, many things would be different today. There would probably still be slaves. Women probably would not even be allowed to vote, let alone to serve in governmental positions. Women would probably get less pay compared to men for the same type of work. We are all truly equal now in the present because of her and some other important people who fought for women’s rights and equality. I hope you have learned something new about Susan B. Anthony from this article and have enjoyed reading this article. There are so many influential women in history and I hope this article will inspire you to learn more about these remarkable ladies who have changed the world.

Ava

I was still shocked. I was shocked at recess, the next few periods, and at the end of school. How did Amy, out of all people, get the part? I know I should’ve been happy for her, but...a part of me is just irritated at her. How will I even talk to her for the rest of the day? Will the horrible part of me want to unleash my hidden fury, or will I just congratulate her? How do people even deal with moments like this?

-

A few days had passed ever since the cast was chosen. Ever since then, Amy and I haven’t said a word to each other. I thought of speaking to her, but I couldn’t come up with what to say.

And now, we’re forced to talk.

Today was the first day of rehearsals, and I was wildly nervous. At least Mila was by my side, even though rehearsals were strictly for cast only. Well, maybe not strictly. Mrs. Richards doesn’t usually notice, or even do anything about it in the first place.

“I’m so nervous!” I said to Mila as we walked to the auditorium. Do I even have the guts to walk through those doors?
“Uh-huh.” she answered absentmindedly, carrying not one, but two notebooks. She jotted down some notes in one of them, but it didn’t seem to be anything CS-related.

“What’s that?” I asked her, partly because I’m curious and partly because I’m stalling.

“I’m taking notes for really cool hairstyles. Who knows?” she mumbled, “Maybe Mrs. Richards will let me be in charge of hairstyles or something.”
I shrugged as we walked through the doors of the auditorium, where the cast greeted us.

I waved at all of them while a few waved back, including that girl, Bianca, from social studies class. Mila walked in the other direction and went backstage. She tripped over something on the floor and fell with a loud crash. How did no one notice her?

“I’M OKAY!” Mila shouted, getting up. Again, how did no one notice her?!

Mrs. Richards started talking about how we were going to do the play, while Mila was standing quietly in the corner. Bianca turned around and saw her. “What are you doing here?”
She threw her free hand up in the air and scoffed. “Oh, so now you notice!”

Amy

I was sitting next to Sandy at rehearsal. I can’t imagine doing this every day for two whole weeks. I was so wrapped up in my thoughts that I didn’t notice Ava and her friend Mila come in or that Mrs. Richards had started speaking. Sandy shook my shoulder, “Earth to Amy,” she said. I perked up. Did I miss anything important? While I was thinking, did the aliens start to invade Earth? (just kidding)

“What?” I asked plainly.

“Ava’s friend, Mila, came to practice, and we’ve got to give our clothing size to Xander,” Sandy replied. “Who’s Xander?” I asked.

“The one with the funny hair; remember last year everyone thought he was dating Olivia,” Sandy said. I had no idea who she was talking about. I looked around and it became clear who she was talking about. There was one kid who probably had the weirdest hair I have ever seen. I’ll give you a description: he had a blob of hair on his head that was blond, red, and brown at the same time. It looked as though he hadn’t cut it since the Stone Age.

“Okay, everyone, quiet down,” said Mrs. Richards with so much authority in her voice that it made me jolt. “I’m going to go around the circle and each of you are going to say your clothing size, so Xander here can make your costume. Xander, take note of the sizes with my pennnnn... Where’d my pen go?! It must be here somewhere…” Mrs. Richards said, the confidence in her voice draining.

“It’s okay, I have one, Mrs. Richards,” said Xander, waving a pen in the air. “Okay, let’s go, first Bianca Patterson,” Mrs. Richards said. Everyone said their size. “Everyone, find a buddy and start practicing lines. I want them memorized by Friday, so we’ve got two weeks to perfect this play!” Everyone found a buddy, and Sandy went with Bianca. Why?! I knew no one here! How could she do this to me?! “I know I should go with you because it’s your first time, but Bianca doesn’t know anyone here; you can go with your sister,” Sandy said. I guess she was right, but Sandy didn’t know how awkward it was! I’m sure if she knew, Sandy wouldn’t be buddies with Bianca. I looked around the room and everyone had a buddy except Ava and I (and also Mila, Xander, and Olivia, but they weren’t memorizing any lines. Olivia was in charge of makeup, so she was working with Xander.) I sort of walked over to Ava; she knew there was no one left...but me.

“Should I say my lines first or should you?” I mumbled. “Huh?” Ava said.

“Should I say my lines first or should you?” I asked, a little louder this time. “Oh, okay, umm... You can go first,” Ava said. I could tell she was a bit out of it. I wasn’t much different, I mean I’m paying more attention to her than to my lines. Was she mad at me? With Ava, it’s easy to tell if she’s feeling any emotions; it’s just hard to tell which one.

Ava

The last few minutes were some of the most awkward minutes of my life. Amy and I just stood there, practicing our lines. We didn’t know what to say to each other. Moments later, we were finished practicing all of our lines.

I don’t completely know why, but I can’t help feeling a little bit...mad at Amy. I really wanted the part, and to see her doing so well at it made me feel miserable and furious at the same time. What bothered me the most was how good Amy was at playing Callie’s role. Maybe I was afraid that I’d no longer be the actress in the family.

Amy noticed my lack of responding to what she just said and asked, “Are you okay, Ava?”

I shrugged, contemplating whether or not I should tell her my emotions.

She ran her fingers through a part of her hair. “Are you...mad at me?” Amy mumbled, avoiding eye contact.

I took a deep breath, staring at the floor. “Well, maybe a little,”

She looked at me, rambling, “Well, I don’t even want the part in the first place, Ava! I mean, you deserve it! And plus, there'll always be other chances.”

I sighed. “I know. It’s just—what if you enjoy playing Callie? What if you try out for the lead part next time...and you get it? And what if that happens all the time?”
Amy took a deep breath. “Ava! You know I won’t do that.”

“But...what if you do?” I questioned.

Annoyed, she shook her head. She started to deny any fact that she’d steal my title, raising her voice this time. I, in return, released my worries and furies at her. In a matter of three minutes, we started talking—well, shouting, to be exact—over each other. I was not really sure if either of us completely understood what we were saying. All I can say is that it was really loud.

For some reason, no one really noticed our bickering (just like with the Mila situation). That went on for a few minutes, until Bianca came over, crossing her arms. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. What in the world is going on?!”

That still didn’t silence us, which annoyed Bianca. Mila, rolling her eyes, walked over to us and blew a whistle (Why did she even have that?!) so loud (I think she blew it extra loud on purpose) that it didn’t only silence Amy and me, but the whole cast along with us. Everyone turned their attention to Mila. “That’s what you all get when you leave me standing awkwardly when everyone is talking with a buddy!” she said, racing through the words.

All of the members of the cast were still staring, probably having their minds filled with questions...or maybe they’re just having trouble getting the ringing of the whistle out of their ears. Silence filled the room until everyone decided to continue practicing their lines.

“Oh, come on! No one will even ask me why I carry a whistle around?!” Mila groaned, retreating to the corner to silently continue writing in her notebook.

Amy

Why was Ava mad?! It’s not even my fault that I got the part! I know it’s stupid, but I’m mad that she’s mad. It’s just so stupid! I was even considering quitting, so she could have the part! I guess I’m going to try out for all the parts she wants in every play she ever tries out for. “Guys,” Bianca said to us, “you’re not the only ones in the room. You’re partners whether you like it or not, so stop arguing and practice your lines.” She then turned to Mila. “You can help Xander and Olivia with costume designs,” Bianca said, then walked away. I saw Mila open her notebook to a page with a bunch of hairstyles on it and walked swiftly to Xander and Olivia. Ava and I practiced our lines again in angry mumbles. After about twenty minutes, our practice was finally over. We got on the bus and headed home. Our dad could tell we were mad at each other, but his parenting policy was: “If they're arguing, it’s important; they figure it out themselves.” So, he did nothing about it. Our mom is usually more direct about our fighting, but she’s designing that skyscraper and was super busy. The next couple days went by slowly. Even though practice was constantly ending in fights, Ava and I had both memorized our lines by Friday, as Mrs. Richards had instructed. We were about to do our first rehearsal. I was going to make sure I was doing my best acting, because Ava was being super annoying lately about me getting the part. I know it sounds petty, but it’s not! If you were in this situation, you’d be frustrated too! We started our first rehearsal. Things went smoothly at first; the zombies rising from the dead, Callie getting pushed away from the battles, and so on. It came to the part where Amelia ran into Callie for the first time. I thought I might explain what happened better if I showed the lines.

“Is that you, sister?” Ava asked with melancholy in her voice. I could tell she was doing her best acting just to annoy me.

“Amelia, it has been many years,” I said with the same sadness and confusion. I wasn’t going to let her be better than me.

“I thought you were dead all this time,” Ava said with a bit of excitement this time.

“I was dead and continue to be,” I said.

“But yet you stand here before me, talking in your sweet voice,” Ava said. It was becoming more obvious that we were competing to be better than each other now.

“Haven’t you heard the news?” I said, “The dead walk among the living now, still dead as forever we shall remain.”

“But the zombies that have come from their graves all have unfinished business. You hadn’t started anything that needed to be finished,” Ava said with such denial and sadness, it could’ve convinced anybody this scene was real.

“I never said goodbye to you or my friends, that is why you see me here now,” I remarked with melancholy and regret.

“I’ve got to go, but sister, meet me here tomorrow,” Ava said. You could see fake tears in her eyes.

“I will if I can,” I responded. “Goodbye, Amelia.”

The curtains closed as we walked in opposite directions. “That was simply wonderful!” Mrs. Richards exclaimed. “Now, that’s all we have time for. Go home, everyone!” Mrs. Richards said.

Ava

I went off the stage and made my way to Mila, who was watching our rehearsals. “So, how’d I do?” I asked her, hoping for an honest response.

She shrugged. “I could tell that both of you were trying to outdo each other. You can decide whether that’s good or bad,” Mila snapped, grabbing her notebook from the seat she left it on.

“Okay, what’s wrong?” I questioned, since it wasn’t normal for her to act this way to me (for other people, she can definitely be like that). “Lighten up. There’s no way your situation is gonna be worse than mine.”

She shook her head and grumbled, “Four words: Chase is tutoring me.”
I gasped. Well, that took a turn of events. Mila and I had always hated Chase (you can say that we’re enemies), and sometimes we all (but mostly just Mila and Chase) get into verbal fights. And, oh boy, Mila is freakishly amazing at those verbal fights (or not serious trash talk, you can say). “We’ll talk more about this tomorrow; I gotta go home. Honestly, I rather talk to you than have another awkward dinner.”
Mila nodded as I took off in the other direction. I walked out of the school and went to the bus station, where Amy was already there. Was the conversation that long that Amy had time to walk all the way there?
We didn’t say anything to each other on the bus or at home. And before we knew it, it was the next day: Saturday.

The entire cast decided that we would all meet up on weekdays and weekends for rehearsals and practice. So there would be another round of—you guessed it!—awkward moments and fighting with Amy.

We all planned to meet up at 1:00, and it’s 12:20 right now. We decided to go to the school a little earlier, so we took a bus and got to the school in a matter of minutes with enough time to spare. Mila was already there with two of her notebooks, writing something in one of them.

“Hey,” she said, not looking up at us.

“Hi,” I replied, not knowing what to say. We all stood there in awkward silence, until I started a conversation. “So...guess what? I’m doing well in advanced science!”
“Cool, but I wish you didn’t leave me alone in regular science,” Mila groaned.  “Now when I have to choose a new lab partner, I have to categorize the people from people who don’t know me and people who think I’m weird. Then there’s someone annoying and another one that I rather pass on. But Pass,”—I think she’s referring to their labels as a name—“is wayy better than Annoying, but she always has a partner! So I’m stuck with Annoying!” I glanced at Amy to check if she knew what Mila was talking about. As if she could read my mind, she shook her head.

“Hey! I was your lab partner last time!” A voice behind us commented.

Mila crossed her arms. “Shut it, Chase,”—He was the voice—“we’re talking about Annoying.”

“I’m Annoying!”
She held up her phone. “Hah! Joke’s on you: I just recorded that! It’ll be my new ringtone for you.”
“You don’t have my number...” Chase’s voice trailed off.

Mila nodded and replied in a singsong voice, “But I do have your Instagram account!”

Bianca—since when did she even get here?—turned to Amy and me and said, “See? They’re showing you that fighting is silly! That’s why you two should stop.”
Mila opened her mouth to protest (we all know they weren’t trying to teach us a lesson; it’s just the typical quarrels between Mila and Chase), but Mrs. Richards walked up to us. “Okay, everyone, let’s go inside the school for rehearsals!”

Amy

“Okay, I think we’ll continue from where we left off yesterday,” Mrs. Richards said, “so we’re at the scene where Callie meets up with Amelia.” Ava and I got into our positions.

“Callie, there is something I just have to know...what side are you on?” Ava asked.

“Whatever do you mean?” I replied, sounding confused.

“You’re dead and I’m alive; there’s a war between the dead and the living—” Ava started to say.

“Oh, you mean that. Well, neither,” I interrupted. “The zombies and the humans are fighting each other for absolutely no reason.”

“Then why don’t you try to stop them?” Ava questioned. “I mean, Callie, you’re already dead; you can’t die again.”

“Zombies can die, as you said yesterday; zombies come to life because they have unfinished business. When we finished this business, we’d go back to being dead,” I said.

“But you said that your unfinished business was not saying goodbye to the people you loved, didn’t you say goodbye to me just yesterday,” Ava remarked, “Why aren’t you dead now?”

“I think it has to be a final goodbye, I’m not sure; the rules of being dead are confusing,” I said.

“Well, why don’t you and I stop the fighting?! We can do it, I know we can!” Ava said excitedly.

“I suppose we could, but how?” I asked skeptically.

“We could stand between the armies they wouldn’t charge if it would hurt us, I’m sure of it!” Ava declared.

“I’ll do it, but if you die, it’s not my fault,” I said.

“They’ll have a battle on top of Mikinin’s Hill tomorrow; be there at ten,” Ava said.

“PM or AM?” I asked.

“AM,” Ava confirmed.

The curtains closed, and we had a couple of minutes until our next scene.

Ava

The scene with Amy and me (or Callie and Amelia, if you want to refer to our roles) was finally over, so I hopped off the stage and went to Mila, who was sitting in one of the seats. For some reason, she was holding a large cup of some green drink.

“Now, before you ask,” she said to me. “I went across the street and saw this huge line. The place was selling boba tea! So I fell in line and got some. And this matcha is totally worth it.” she said, taking a sip of the matcha.

“Cool,” I replied. Mila got up from her seat and set the drink down. Carrying a notebook, she walked up the mini steps to the stage. Mila bumped into Mrs. Richards, and her notebook went plummeting down to the floor. When it fell, it opened to a page with a bunch of hairstyle notes with photos and website links attached. Everyone stared at the floor in silence.

“If this were a sit-com, everything would be in slow motion,” Mila commented, picking up her notebook.

Mrs. Richards stood in astonishment. “Mila...those hairstyles notes look fascinating! Is there any chance you would help us with the hairstyles for the play?”
She nodded like crazy. “Sounds like fun, so sure.”
Mrs. Richards turned to Amy (who was apparently standing next to me) and me. “Girls, you did a fabulous job!” After saying that, she walked away.

“I totally did better,” I said to Amy, whispering angrily.

“No, I did,” she whispered back to me. Three seconds later, we were fighting, though we were kinda quiet. Well, if you can say that a whisper-shouting fight is quiet.

“Oh my gosh, guys! Stop!” Mila scolded (What is going on? That’s so unlike her!) us. “Everyone knows that the key to a good fight is when you say stuff at the same time. I would demonstrate, but I have no clue where my fighting buddy is. Okay, continue.” Well, that makes sense now.

Bianca—again with the random popping up?!—groaned. “No! Ava and Amy, you guys should just stop fighting. Don’t listen to her.”

Awkward silence—by far the worst type of silence—took over, until Mila sipped her boba—when did she even get that back?!—loudly. “Well, this is awkward,” she mumbled. “I’m gonna go ask someone to tell me what I missed in the play.” Mila quickly walked to the first person she saw, the clicking sound of her boots reverberating throughout the room. After two minutes of talking, Mila went back to us, drinking her boba. And so the silence began again, not that it ever completely stopped.

Thankfully, Mrs. Richards announced that it was time for the next scene. “Break a leg, everyone!” Mila yelled, sitting down in a vacant seat. We all took our positions as the curtains opened once again.

Amy

Ughh! I feel angry at Ava, but I also feel a strange resolve. I never really hold grudges, but it’s not because I forget; it’s because I know I overreacted to the situation. I know I overreacted here, but I don’t want to make up because I don’t want her to think I forgot how annoying she was being. It’s stupid, I know but I’m fighting with her even though I’m not mad.

I walk up to the fake hill. I stumbled through my lines. I did them well enough, but I was not great. I could tell Ava was looking at me strangely. Was I doing worse or better than usual? I know from experience it’s hard to tell. I didn’t need to say much in this scene was Ava’s. I just had to put a determined look on my face and stand there. The scene finally finished. “Okay, everyone!” Mrs. Richards yelled into her megaphone so loudly, it probably gave me permanent ear damage. “Lunch break! Good work everybody! Silena, nice job on the hill!”

“Thanks, Mrs. Richards,” a girl I assumed was Silena said while walking out with Bianca. Sandy and I walked to the yard for a lunch break. Thank goodness, I was starving. I quickly ate my PB and J sandwich. I opened my book to show Sandy I didn’t really want to talk, but she didn’t get the message. She went on talking about all the gossip going around school and how she really wanted a jacket she saw at a clothing store. “Also,” she said, breaking me out of my half listening state, “you were a bit out of it at practice today; is something wrong?”

“No,” I lied, “I just needed to sneeze during the scene.” She nodded, “It happens.” Sandy has many talents, perception is not one of them. We walked back to the auditorium. Before I could get through the doors, Silena and Bianca confronted me. “We already talked to Ava,” Bianca said.

“Huh? About what?” I asked, confused.

“About you guys fighting. It’s no use for me to design all these awesome props if it leads to the two of you fighting all the time,” Silena said while pulling a beanie on her head.

“Okay,” I said awkwardly, ¨I’ll try to make up with her by the final show.” Bianca opened her mouth to argue, but was interrupted by Mrs. Richards screaming into her megaphone. “We’ve got two scenes with the human general and one with the zombie general, then after you can all go home!”

Walk-a-thon

By: Ella Gorospe

The 5k Walk, or Walk-a-thon is an amazing and exciting event at St. Anne School. It is happening on May 14, 2021 this year. Each and every class goes on a fun walk with chaperones and their teachers. The Walk-a-ton is a 5k, which is about 3 miles long but how far each class walks depends on the grade levels. Before we leave, we would usually have hotdogs, hamburgers, salads, or something else if some students brought lunch. The 5k Walk goes into Golden Gate Park, near Stow Lake and back. Once it is finished, we would usually get rewarded with ice cream after we come back. For the entire day, we get to wear free dress and a unique tee shirt that a student made especially for this year’s 5k Walk.

The rules for making a 5k Walk tee-shirt are pretty simple. Each student who wants to participate should draw on a piece of printer paper so that it is easier to put on the shirt. They have to include St. Anne School and the words “5k Walk.” It must be unique and different from past tee shirt winners. Any student who participates in it earns a free dress pass even if they are not chosen! St. Anne students that are participating have to turn in by April 5, 2021 to the office and the Student Council will decide who will win. The 5k Walk is a really fun event at St. Anne School, which includes a fun walk and some cool and unique tee shirts!

How Have Holidays Been Affected Throughout the Pandemic?

By: Claire Wallerstein

Since the start of the pandemic over a year ago, holidays have been affected in many ways. Mostly, it is a negative effect. Usually, people would be gathering in religious places to celebrate events sacred to their religion. Along with not being able to gather for celebrations like Passover or Easter, many people have not been able to see their families for holidays. Also, many of the holidays that people enjoy involve family gatherings. However, thanks to Zoom video meetings, people have benefited from being able to see their family, but virtually. Even with Zoom though, it is still hard because it is not the same to be away from your family during holidays that many hold sacred. Throughout the pandemic, the CDC has recommended strongly against traveling and meeting with family as it can help the spread of COVID-19. The CDC says that if you are going to gather, you should limit the gathering to 5 people, stay outside, wear masks, stay six feet apart, and wash hands regularly. One of the better aspects, however, is that the normal stress of the holidays has somewhat eased up. Usually people are stressed about either people coming to their houses for holidays and having to cook food and decorate, along with clean. Either that or you are stressed about going to someone’s house, bringing presents or food and dressing up nicely. During the holidays, it has been tough for everyone to adjust to staying at home in order to stay safe. One thing for sure though, it has been very tough to quarantine over the holidays.

Chuck’s Out of This World! Part 1

By: Jimmy Ng, Jr.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be out of Earth. Chuck does. When he was as little as four years old, he started watching the first astronauts go to space. That’s when he decided he would be an astronaut when he becomes older. As he got older and older, he learned more about space. How the galaxy is limitless. Chuck said to his mom, “Hey, did you know that you could fit one million Earth planets in the Sun. Isn’t that fascinating!” “Sure is, said his mom. “You sure know a lot about space and the galaxy.” Chuck went to his computer because he always goes to different websites to find one fun fact a day and writes it into his journal. He was now 12 years old and has so many fun facts that he memorizes to tell his science teacher.

25 years later, he was trained and ready to go into space. “3, 2, 1…. Blastoff!” They shot faster than the speed of light out of Earth. When they reached the moon, Chuck was fascinated. He saw pictures of the moon, but nothing is better than seeing it in person. After staying on the moon for a while, they headed back to the spaceship. They ate “PUFFS.” They tasted similar to the baby food on Earth except that it was in different flavors. He had a good time on the shuttle and after a while, he dozed off and went to sleep.

 HACK

By: Edwin Tam

So this is H.A.C.K. Highly-Advanced-Cyborg-Kid. He’s a cyborg. Like the name says. But we’re just going to go with HACK. HACK is a hacker, and he was created to protect the people from H.A.C.K. Highly-Advanced-Criminal-Kids. We interviewed him for our newspaper. He is surprisingly smart!

Q: So, HACK, are you a white hat or a black hat?

A: I’m a black hat.

Q: I’m sorry, what?

A: I am a black hat because I’m wearing a black hat. You know, because I’m a hacker?

Q: No no no. Not like that. Just because you’re wearing a black hat does not mean you are. A black hat is someone that hacks to steal personal info. A white hat is the opposite, they prevent black hats from getting your info. So you’re a white hat?

A: I mean, I’m wearing a black hat but I protect people from getting hacked, so I’m a grey hat?

Q: There is no such thing as a grey hat! Well there is but you have to take a side. I’m just gonna call you a white hat. Is that fine?

A; Sure, but I am wearing a black hat.

Q: I know! Just go with it ok?

A: Yes, Mother.

Q: Ok, let's just get on with the questions. How do you track the black hats? Mainly the other HACK?

A: Well, if you just think of it, you can hear them. It’s like your inner self is telling you, “Oh it’s over there other self” (*Plays with fingers and counts to ten)

Q: Okayyyy, What about the techniques, how do you stop them?

A; *Cough. If you’re like me and you're a ninja, all you have to do is go to their house and be like hyaaaaa. Or maybe zoooooooom, zoooooommmmmmmmm!!!

Q: Yeah, forgot about that. Why did the government make you anyway?

A: The government made me because I asked them to make me.

Q: Can you make this “S” for statement?

A: Yeah sure, sure.

S: Ok I’m finished, this HACK kid is driving me crazy!

Different Perspectives From Home and Physically Going to School

By: Dean Hwang

Have you been going to school and forgot the feeling of zooming at home or is it the opposite- you zoom and you forgot the feeling of going back to school? Well today I’ll be talking about some different perspectives from home and going back to school. When I came back to school it felt very different, but when I went to recess everything changed I felt like a normal student. For me it was much easier to learn things at school, because you can see it better, ask more questions, and less distractions here at school.

Now, I’m going to ask some of my fellow classmates how they feel about going back to school. My friend Zach Kleppin says “It’s really fun to talk to my friends, play basketball, and it is easier to concentrate in school.” Also Ethan Smith, he said “Going back was really fun, talking and telling jokes with his friends and says “It’s great to see my friends again.”Alex Hwang says “It’s fun playing with my friend Kenneth, but only one boy came so it’s not as fun.

Finally, I’m going to ask some questions to people who are at home doing zoom. Nathan Lee says “I would go back, but my parents didn’t want to due to Covid-19.” Those were all the people I could contact that were at home so hopefully you heard some different perspectives. Thank you for listening to my perspective article.

Unconventional Sea Creatures: Blue Ribbon Eel

By: Princewill Onyebuchi

From its little serpent head to its lengthy sleek corps, the Blue Ribbon Eel is among the most enticing deepwater species. A popular topic for artists of the ocean and a fish from an ecosystem on the reef. The most specialized saltwater aquariums are designated for ribbon eels. The slender lace-like dorsal marks and undulated moving pattern are where these famed eels got their name. Just about all the time you will find just the head of a Ribbon Eel, and you might soon find out how they get their names if you are fortunate enough to spot these dragons swim.

Ribbon Eels can reach a maximum size of up to 4 feet long. Adult Ribbon Eels have a yellow anterior finished blue shell. Being protandric hermaphrodites (male transition into females) like clownfish, are an intriguing feature of the Ribbon Eel.  It used to be thought that ribbon eels of every color stage were thought to be various types, but we know that now it is just part of changes of formation. Youths are is black with a dorsal yellow fin. In males, the black colors on the underside of the mouth, snout, and dorsal fin are changing to yellow. Females are yellow to yellow blue/greenish to strong yellow.

Typically, you just see tiny Ribbon Eels located on the reef that pop out from the stones and groves. They are fiercely positioned with their small, pointed teeth for show and ribbon eels withdraw easily if you come near them.

Frogs

By Mikayla Cheng

Frogs are small amphibians, and their scientific name is “Anura.” Many people love frogs, and they can be great pets. They are mainly docile creatures, and they are really cute. I will be telling you a bunch of information about frogs! Let’s start off with what frogs eat. Frogs are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. Frogs aren’t picky though, and will eat almost whatever they can get a hold of with their long, sticky tongue. Most people know that’s how a frog catches its prey. A frog mostly eats bugs like spiders and flies, though.

Frogs are one of those species that are slowly going extinct. Sadly, there are only around 7,000 frogs left in the entire world. Every year, the amphibian population goes down by around 4%. Frogs are going extinct because of one of the most common reasons for extinction : habitat loss. However, frogs are very adaptable, calm creatures, making them easy to keep as a pet. As long as they have some sort of living space with a pond, they should be just fine. Frogs normally live up to 10 - 12 years.

I’m sure some people have heard that some frogs are poisonous. More specifically, the poison dart frog. This frog species is known for its status as highly poisonous. Poison dart frogs usually are some sort of bright color with black blotches all over them. If you see a frog with a similar pattern, you should probably stay away. Even if it is a normal frog, I’m sure you’d rather be safe than sorry. Although poison dart frogs are not usually deadly, they are highly toxic. The poison in their skin can cause swelling all over your body, nausea, and even paralysis. All these effects can occur just by touching them.

However, you should be much more scared of the golden poison frog, which is very deadly. As per the name, golden poison frogs are a golden color. Don’t let their pretty golden coat fool you though, because these frogs can kill 10 grown men. These frogs make it to the list of some of the most poisonous amphibians in the world. I hope you learned a little something about frogs from this!

Candy and Chocolate

By: Valeria Fuentes

Everyone loves candy! Some people are addicted to chocolate. Others aren’t, and some people might think it’s disgusting. Other people like sour and spicy candy. Others like gummy bears or something different. But candies come from all over the world, In Mexico, they have very spicy candy. It’s also different in China and Japan and every other country. Candy has been around for at least four thousand years and there are more than 2,000 different kinds of candy today. The word candy comes from the Greek word “kand”, a type of “candy” which was made out of a reed garnished with honey and spices.

Candy is made by dissolving sugar in water or milk to make a syrup and when it is boiled. To make caramelized candy these are the basic ingredients, but there are other ingredients to add color, smell, and other flavors. Some candies have nuts because the nuts enhance the flavor or the texture of the candy. Other ingredients used are butter and fats because they can make the candy hard, or gives candy more flavor of the candy and makes it have a better taste. Candies get their flavors mostly from candy oils and these oils are oils that you can put in a cake too. Some candies have acid in them or gelatin. Others have chocolate. Chocolate is made from cacao beans and when the cacao beans enter the factory, they are sifted to see if there are rocks or wood in them. The next step is to put the beans into large roasting ovens at a temperature of 210-290F. The roasting process takes up to two hours and the heat brings out more flavor and aroma. The next step is to crush the cocoa nibs and turn them into a thick paste called chocolate liquor. The chocolate liquor gets slammed by a hydraulic press and this removes the fat or cocoa butter. Cacao butter is used to make chocolate. Chocolate liquor is not smooth or creamy and has a bitter taste so sugar, cacao butter, vanilla, and milk are added. When the cacao and the sugar are mixed, the texture is still not smooth so they put the mixture into steel rollers to give it more texture. To give the chocolate more flavor the mixture is “Conched” which means it gets put into a machine that makes the mixture soft and shiny. The reason why it’s called Conched is that the machine is shaped like a conch shell. Finally, the chocolate is cooled down to room tempered, and then the process is repeated a few times. Then you have delicious chocolate!

Different candies are also very popular but chocolate is the most popular. Some people ask, is chocolate candy? Well, the answer is no because candy is made out of sugar but chocolate itself is bitter and sugar has to be added.

International Children’s Book Day

By: Christina Chew

csdfsfsf.PNG

In April, there are several special days that we celebrate. We have April’s Fools’ Day on April 1. Easter Sunday is on April 4 this year. Earth Day will be on April 22 and Arbor Day will be on April 30. But did you know there is one special day in April that celebrates books and is often forgotten? I am really looking forward to the occasion because I love reading. So, what is this special day, and when will it be? Why is it so important? The occasion is International Children’s Book Day (ICBD), and it happens every year on April 2. In addition, the occasion always happens on or around Hans Christian Andersen’s (a Danish author mostly remembered for his fairy tales) birthday. The event has a theme every year, and this year’s theme is “The music of words.”

Why is International Children’s Book Day so important? This momentous event is important for young children. It encourages them to read some of their books on this day and promotes literacy. The significant event can help kids get more intelligent and expand their vocabulary. Each year, a different National section of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) sponsors this event internationally. They invite a prominent author from that country to write a message and a well-known artist to make a poster to promote reading. For this year, IBBY United States is the sponsor. They picked Margarita Engle, a Cuban-American author, to write the message, and Roger Mello, a Brazilian illustrator, to design the poster. This occasion has many fun activities related to reading for children, such as encounters with authors and illustrators, writing contests, and announcements of book rewards.

International Children’s Book Day is one of the lesser known, yet beneficial events for kids. The event promotes reading and inspires kids to read their books. It is loaded with tons of fun activities, and is promoted by famous authors and illustrators. Thus, as a reader, I am really excited to read my books on this day. I anticipate that many people will read books related to that theme on that day since the event can help them get smarter. I hope that after you learned about International Children’s Book Day from this article, you will find the time to read and celebrate this special day each year.

Short Story: A Twin’s Play (Pt. 3)

There were only two more scenes—and I wasn’t in any of them—left to practice, and after we could finally go home. I took a seat next to Mila, and nudged her with my elbow. “Have you ever gotten into a fight before?” I asked her, despite the fact that we weren’t supposed to be talking during rehearsals.

She gave me a look of disappointment. “Come on! Seriously? Do you not pay attention whenever I’m loudly trash talking with someone else?”
I rolled my eyes at her. “Bianca and Silena told me that Amy and I should forgive each other and stop fighting, so...what I’m trying to ask is: when you get into a fight, how do you make up with the person?”
Mila stared blankly at me. “Uhhhh...I dunno.”
I gave her an annoyed look. “Mila! You practically fight with someone every single day! And you don’t know how to make up with them?!” I shook my head in disapproval.

She shrugged. I turned my attention back to the stage (since Mila is helpless in this matter), and the minutes passed by swiftly. Before I knew it, it was the end of rehearsal.

Mila was thankfully coming over to my house that afternoon, so we grabbed our things and headed to the bus stop. Amy was already there with Sandy (she would be coming over, too). The bus came, so we all went on it and arrived home shortly after.

She and I immediately made our way to my room to avoid awkwardness with Amy and her friend. “Okay, what should we do?” I asked her, playing with a loose strand of my hair.

She shrugged. “Maybe we can talk about the you and Amy incident. Why are you two fighting in the first place?”

“I don’t wanna talk about it,” I snapped, wondering if that was a bit too harsh.

She nodded. “You don’t wanna talk about it, but we can just write it in a notebook.” Mila tore out a blank page in her notebook and passed that to me. After, she tossed a pencil to me as well. “Come on, write. While we’re still young.”
I hesitated, but finally wrote a few broad sentences down.

I handed Mila the paper back. “Elaborate,” she said in a commanding tone. Mila gave the paper back to me. I just was about to jot down a few of my thoughts, but there was suddenly a light knock on the door. It swung open, and there was Amy and Sandy, standing outside the door.

Amy

I tried my best to hide how nervous I was. I made sure to talk as if I was acting. It made it easier to say things when I would pretend they were lines from another story. “Ava, I’m sorry,” I said, “I only tried out for the part because I was dared to.” I told her how I didn’t really want to make up and how I overreacted. It was probably the most embarrassing thing I had done in my life, but I continued to pretend I was a character in a play and was able to say how I felt. Much to my surprise, Ava stood up and started to apologize. It was super awkward. This is not a movie; we did not actually ‘make up’ when we said sorry. We were both still a little mad, but by saying sorry we were agreeing not to make a big deal about it any more.

The days passed quickly, and soon it was Friday night, the day of our play. Instead of taking the bus, our mom drove us; she came home from work early to see the play. We went backstage to see it was more of a mess than ever. Everyone was pulling on their costumes. “Those costumes! They looked like they would have taken years to make by a master seamstress. Did Xander really make those? It seemed impossible.”  My thoughts were interrupted by a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see it was Olivia. “Hi!! Everyone’s putting on their costumes. Here’s yours,” she said, “Once you’ve pulled it over your clothes, go to me so I can make you look like a zombie.” Olivia then walked away writing something in her clipboard. I pulled my costume on and went to her, who is helping Chase with his makeup. Everything went well enough for most of the play. The zombies and humans were fighting, Ava (as Amelia) and me (as Callie) worked together to stop the fighting. We were doing our best acting, but we weren’t competing; that was good. Finally, it came to the second to last scene.

“Everyone, stop!” Ava yelled, “Stop fighting! Zombies! You can only be truly dead once you have won a war, correct?” A few of the zombies mumbled in agreement.

“Then the humans must surrender,” I said, causing aggravated mumbles from the human side, “It’s the only way to stop the war!” Neither the humans or the zombies seemed happy with that comment.

“Neither the zombies or the humans will win if you keep fighting,” Ava said, causing confused looks from the soldiers, “People dying is no war won; it’s just loss and sadness.” All the actors and actresses were doing so great; even I was half fooled.

“Yes, I agree to surrender,” said Sandy (as the human general).

“So do I,” said Chase (as the zombie general).

“Ooookay, sign here and here and here,” Ava said, pulling out a piece of paper (I apologize for this line; Mrs. Richards was trying to be funny).

“It’s the 1800s, we can’t read or write,” Sandy said.

“Just put an X,” I said. The generals both signed the paper. Just a second later, the zombies disappeared. Not literally; they fell to the ground and fog machines hid their bodies as they slowly pulled themselves backstage, the fog machines were turned off and all the zombies were gone. You can thank Silena Waller from stage crew for that number. Simple, yet ingenious. “Now we make peace; the dead only coming out to remind the humans of what used to be and the peace shall remain, for a little while at least.” I said with conviction. I looked at Amy and we made up there without saying a word, not just begrudgingly agreeing to work together, but making up for real.

Ava

The play was over, and I think we all—and I don’t mean that as an exaggeration—did pretty well. The acting was good, the special effects were on point (especially Silena Waller’s fog machine one!), and the costumes were amazing. The last few people of the audience exited the auditorium and most of the cast (and people that helped with the play) were headed to the after-party. That meant there were only two people left in the room: Amy and me.

We had a moment during the play where I could see it in her eyes that we made up. I guess everything is good between us now.

I walked toward Amy and cleared my throat. It was time to formally talk about the fight. “Amy, I’m sorry,” I managed to say. I wish some writing prodigy was here to give me a whole speech to say, so I won’t stand here looking foolish.

“For real this time?” she joked, referring to the pretend make up we had a few days ago.

“Yeah, for real this time,” I confirmed. “I guess I’m just really sorry for the way I acted. I just got so caught up in the fact that you were really good at this and that...I was scared. Scared that this’ll become your thing. Amy, you’re so good at many things. Your stories are outstanding and your drawings are beautiful. I guess I was wrapped up in jealousy. And...fear that you’d take this thing away from me; it is the only thing I was better at. Amy, I never admitted this to anyone...but sometimes I feel like I’m your shadow. You’re just so talented...and I was just scared that now that you’re good at acting, I wouldn’t have a thing or talent anymore.”

Amy looked at me in the eye. “You...think you’re in my shadow?” I nodded.

She let out a little laugh. “Ava, sometimes I feel like I’m in your shadow. You’re so outgoing and peppy. You make friends way easier than me. I could go on and on all day!”
I let out a small smile. “I guess we got so caught up in being in each other’s shadows that we never realized that we both share the spotlight!” I said. “Oh gosh, am I the only one who feels that was corny?”
Amy laughed. “It is, but it’s fine.” She extended her hand. “Friends?”
“Friends,” I confirmed, pulling her into a hug.

“Awwwwwww!” Mila (who was apparently standing silently by us) exclaimed. When did she even get here? Does she have a weird superpower where no one notices her for some odd reason? “You guys! That was so sweet! But, seriously, could we repeat that one more time? It’s such good juice for my story, and you guys were talking way faster than I can write!”
Amy and I laughed as I turned to Amy. “Now, let’s go to the after-party!”

And that’s what we did.

The End!

The Magnificent Gray Whale

By: Ella Gorospe

Gray whales are magnificent creatures. The gray whale, or Eschrichtius robustus, migrate all around the northern Pacific Ocean. They can migrate from 10,000 - 14,000 miles every year, which is the longest migration of any animal! There are two populations, one migrates in the northwestern Pacific while the other migrates in the northeast Pacific. Full grown gray whales can grow up to 49 feet long and about 90,000 pounds but usually the females are larger. Usually, they eat amphipods, which are tiny shrimp-like creatures that live on the bottom of the ocean floor; plankton, which are tiny microorganisms; and sometimes squid, krill, crab larvae, herring eggs, and more while on their long migration. Lately, there have been sightings of gray whales being washed up on to the shore, even in our own San Francisco Bay.

Unfortunately, four dead gray whales were discovered in San Francisco Bay and many experts are concerned about the cause of their deaths. The first whale was found on the shore of Crissy Field on March 31, the second at Moss Beach in San Mateo on April 3, then another at Berkeley Marina on April 6, and the last in Muir Beach on April 7. Although gray whales are not endangered, the amount of these whales that have washed ashore are very alarming. Many of these wash up whales have had injuries from ship strikes and some of them have been diagnosed with malnutrition due to climate change affecting the movement of their prey. Unfortunately, scientists haven’t definitively concluded the cause of these particular deaths, but hopefully they will make sure these amazing creatures will stay safe and protected.

Brain Cancer Awareness Month

By Annika Watkins

According to federal figures, over 23,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with brain cancer or other nervous system cancers each year. These cancers account for a small portion of the more than 87,000 brain tumors diagnosed in the United States in 2020. Tumors of the brain and spinal cord come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Tumors are created by irregular cell growth and may be benign or malignant in nature. Benign tumors of the brain and spinal cord develop and press on adjacent brain areas. They can recur and seldom spread to other tissues. Malignant tumors of the brain and spinal cord are capable of spreading rapidly and into other brain tissue. When a tumor develops into or pushes against a part of the brain, it may prevent that part of the brain from functioning properly. Both benign and malignant brain tumors have symptoms and must be treated. Primary brain tumors are tumors that begin in the brain. They may spread to other regions of the brain or the spine, but they rarely expand to other body parts.

Tumors in the brain often originate elsewhere and spread to one or more areas of the brain. Metastatic brain tumors are the term for these types of tumors. Primary brain tumors are less common than metastatic brain tumors. Lung cancer is responsible for about half of all metastatic brain tumors. The color grey is used to represent brain cancer because the grey matter is a significant element of the brain's central nervous system. The month of May is dedicated to raising awareness about brain cancer, so be sure to wear grey this May.

Is Crying Healthy for your Body?

By Mikayla Cheng

Heading 1

I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text and edit me. It's easy.

Crying some can be necessary in order to let out your feelings. But what if I told you that crying can actually be healthy for your body, and many positive results can come with it? Well, it has been proven that crying actually has many benefits. Whether the crying is from sadness, or something else, your tears actually help your body.

Let’s start off with the 3 types of tears that eyes can produce. Reflex tears, continuous tears, and emotional tears. Reflex tears is the type of tears that are expelled from your eyes when it needs to clean itself from dust or other small particles in your eyes. Continuous tears are the type of tears that are expelled from your eyes when your eye needs to lubricate itself to protect it from infection and irritation. Emotional tears are exactly how they sound. These types of tears are expelled from your eyes when you are feeling a strong emotion. Usually it is sadness, but it can also be tears of joy and frustration for example.

Now, that you know the types of tears, here are some benefits from crying. FIrst and most importantly, it can help clear toxins in your body. It has been proven by scientists that tears can help clear out unneeded or bad things in your body. After having a good cry, usually it improves the person’s mood after. Most people feel a lot better after crying. Also, people typically have a better sense of everything after, too. So, if you feel you need to cry, just remember that it’s healthy for your body.

The Mystery of Lacaux: Part 6

By: Hazel Buckingham

The three friends got out of the plane and climbed onto the jagged rocks that were laid before them. For a while no one said anything. How could they? The shock of the moment was still so fresh that the boys had seemingly lost the ability to speak. Finally, Daniel broke the silence with the intellectual words, “Whu-u- What?!”

Carl quickly shaking of the original shock said “We should walk further inland so we can get an idea whether this island is inhabited or not. If there are people then we can replenish our supplies. If not,” Carl continued eerily, “ this place looks a good deal like the carving on the cave wall.” Daniel and Eustace nodded resolutely. Before they could start walking a huge bird-like figure swooped over their heads. It moved so fast that they could barely make out its shape, but was that a lion’s tail they had seen? “Was that... Was that a griffon?!”Daniel exclaimed with a mixture of shock, amusement, and delight all reverberating in his voice. “I think it was,” said Eustace, the amazement in his eyes obvious. Although the trio had believed their theory true (Daniel a bit more than the others), they had never fully imagined what it would be like to see the animals' fairy tales were made in front of their eyes. They continued walking for a while sometimes catching a glimpse of a unicorn or a hippogryph, but with the blink of an eye the animals were gone.

Unconventional Sea Creatures: Barreleye Fish

By: Princewill Onyebuchi

The barrel fish may be more alien-looking than anything else on earth. However, the mysterious barrel is a true being that exists in our seas. The barrel is named for the cylindrical eyes in its translucent head. It looks like a deep seabed with a large glass frame. Yet this strange physical character is simply a clever instrument for hunting that shines through the abyss.

Barreleye fish can be found 2,600 meters underwater along the central Atlantic plateau, New Zealand, and Australia. Drifting jellyfish, copepods, small crustaceans, and other small species of deep water creatures are their predators.

The barrel is most often found in water almost without movement.  The tiny flat fins permit careful maneuvers and can be helpful for navigating the steep tentacles of jellyfish, which may capture smaller prey.

Siphonophores, or colonial jellies, are among the popular jellyfish that occupy the ecosystem along with the barreleye. These siphonophores mature to over 33 meters in length and float across the ocean as their lengthy tentacles walk across the water catching tiny animals. Researchers consider that the barreleye will eat the animals trapped in the tentacles of siphonophore.

As for its see-through head, it is thought that it is an adaption to the wild. Researchers also discovered that a substance forming a translucent shell has already filled it. Previous reports of barrel fish have forgotten to include the bubble head, which scientists believe that when the fish had been taken to the examination surface, it had been killed.

The Poisoning

By: Valeria Fuentes

At Walks Middle School, there was a girl named Kelly Grinham and she was walking to school, with her best friend, Cora Bennett. When they got to school, they met Maya and Riley, who were the bullies of the school. They pretended that they didn't see them. Maya pushed Cora’s books on the ground. Riley and Maya just laughed and Kelly helped Cora pick up her books.

The next day Cora was going to tell Maya to apologize but apparently, Maya got a strange phone call from her mom. Cora asked what the phone call was about but Maya said, ‘’It’s none of your business.’’A few hours later, there was a crowd of students including the principal of the school. Cora and Kelly went to see what was going on. When they finally got in front of the crowd there was a note saying,’’ The cheerleaders are going to get sick.’’After lunch, the friends went to spy on the cheerleaders but they weren't there, so they asked the coach and she said that they were all vomiting in the health room. When they got to the health room they asked the nurse what happened and she said,’’ No idea? The coach told me that they were all fine and then they all started to feel sick and the coach sent all the girls here and they all started vomiting’’. ‘’That’s strange,’’ said Kelly. When school was over, Cora went to Kelly’s house and they tried to list all the possible suspects who could’ve gotten the cheerleaders sick. The first one was Emily, the school prankster, the second one was the lunch lady because the cheerleaders got sick after lunch. The third suspect was the coach because she coaches the cheerleading team. The next day, there was a note again saying,’’ The soccer team better watch out!’’ After lunch the same thing happened; they all got sick again school they went to see Emily and she said,’’ No I haven’t done anything yesterday because I was sick also.’’ After they interrogated Emily the friends found out she wasn't the one who did it. It wasn't the coach either because the soccer team also got sick and she spends the whole day at the gym having PE with the classes and she teaches Cheerleading not soccer.

The next day was normal, nothing happened except they had a test and Kelly had to correct Maya’s test which was all in cursive and was hard to read. When the bell rang people didn't go to the cafeteria. Instead, they went to the vending machine. But every day, there were more people absent. A week later Cora and Kelly snuck into the kitchen to see if anything looked out of the ordinary and there was nothing wrong with it. They looked at everything. A few weeks later they were both clueless until there was a note again on the board this time it said,’’ Good luck on the soccer game.’’ After school, they brought all the evidence together and then it struck Kelly it was Maya who did it because the notes were in cursive and Maya is the only one who wrote in cursive and it wasn't the cafeteria food. It was the snacks from the vending machine that made them sick. Maya’s dad owns the vending machine company.  A month ago, Maya's dad went to the school and told them how vending machines are created. The next day when school was over Cora bought trail mix to see if something was weird and she found a weird-looking berry and she ate it. A few hours later she threw up and she found out what happened. When Maya had a phone call, it was her mom and her mom told her that her brothers ate a strange berry and got sick and Maya’s dad was about to go out of business. So she wanted everyone to think that the cafeteria food was making them sick but it was the snacks from the vending machine. On the day of the soccer game, they told the principal about the case and caught Maya. After five weeks they finally caught her and solved the mystery.

Her Friend

By: Christina Chew

Once upon a time lived a woman named Rose. She was young and beautiful for her age. Many men liked her, but she turned down all offers on being friends with them. Although she was beautiful, she was spiteful and jealous, who loved getting revenge on people who have wronged her. She was very mean to everyone she met. One day, a fairy had enough of how she acted and cursed Rose. The fairy gave her the ability to see the ghosts of people, including her loved ones. She hoped that Rose would be able to improve after seeing her dead relatives. However, something must have been wrong with the curse, as Rose didn’t see any ghosts of her dead relatives.

One day, many years after the curse, the fairy suddenly remembered the curse she put on Rose. She wanted to know how Rose was doing, so she checked on her. Realizing that the curse was not working, the fairy contemplated on what to do next. It dawned on her that she could send a ghost to Rose to teach her how to be kind. The fairy, after consulting her spell book just to be sure, quickly recast the spell on Rose and sent a ghost to Rose’s home. Rose, without knowing the fairy’s grand plan, went about her day as usual. She went to the grocery store to get necessities. The visit was normal like always. Rose, being the mean-spirited old lady, wandered around in the store and loathed everyone who was in her way as usual. Nothing happened, at least until she came back home. When she arrived home, she saw that there was a person in her house. She freaked out, and then the panic turned into anger. She yelled at the person for trespassing, but she didn’t seem to hear her. She tried grabbing the person’s attention until she finally looked at her. As the person turned to face Rose, Rose saw that the person was a young girl and that the girl looked terrified. Rose also noticed that the juvenile was transparent.

She was really scared, fell backwards, and yelled, “Please don’t hurt me!”

The girl smiled and said, “Ma’am, I won’t hurt you.”

Rose relaxed and finally said, “What is your name, miss?”

The girl said, “I am Mina. What is your name?”

Rose answered, “My name is Rose. Out of curiosity, why are you transparent?”

Mina said, “Oh, I am a ghost. I died ages ago. I don’t harm others, so please calm down.”

The old woman, Rose, believed her and relaxed. She decided to talk with Mina to learn more about her.

They talked for a while before Rose asked Mina how she died.

Mina hesitated before saying, “Well, I had a disease that could potentially kill me. The doctors and scientists desperately looked for a cure but couldn’t find one. It took many years for them to try to make a cure, and during that time, I died because of the sickness.”

After a bit of time, Mina asked, “On a separate note, how are you able to see me?”

“I am not quite sure. I just happened to see you today,” answered the old lady.

The pair talked for a bit and eventually, became really close. They would live their normal lives (as normal as a ghost can live her life) of course. The two would also talk to each other a lot during the day, as Rose had no friends to talk to and no one else besides Rose saw Mina. They were both very lonely, so they became best friends as time went by, and Mina would help Rose become kinder to others. They would keep on bonding until Mina said something to Rose one day.

Rose had not seen Mina for several days. She began to worry, as Mina had never been away for so long ever since she and Rose became friends. When Mina appeared the very next day, she looked sad.

Rose was concerned and asked, “Mina, why are you so sad? Is there anything wrong?”

Mina looked at Rose sadly and said, “I don’t want to leave you, Rose, and I love talking to you and hanging out with you. I’m sad because I need to go to Heaven soon. Everything I need to do on Earth is completed and there’s no reason for me to stay on Earth.”

When Rose heard what Mina said, she was close to crying and said, “No, you can’t leave me. I need you!”

Mina reassured her, “I still get a month on Earth. We can make more memories together for this month before I have to leave.”

Rose reluctantly agreed, and they went out to make memories as soon as possible, since they had no time to waste.

During that month, they made many memories together and became even closer. They did many fun things together, such as going to the Carnival, playing games, and much more. Whenever they were out, Rose looked weird to others because no one could see Mina and they thought Rose was crazy since she was constantly talking to the air. Time flew by and the month passed quickly. The day before Mina had to leave, she had a candid conversation with Rose.

Mina asid, “Rose, the time has come. Tomorrow is the day that I have to leave Earth and go to Heaven. I love the time we had together and I will always remember you wherever I am!”

Rose replied, “Nooooo! Please don’t leave, Mina! You are my only friend. What will I do without you? I will be so lonely!”

Rose started to cry. Mina wiped away Rose’s tears and comforted Rose.

“Don’t be sad, Rose! You will be fine without me. You will make many other friends, I am sure. You are kind and caring. Everyone will love to be your friend!” Mina said.

“Really? You really think so? Nobody has ever called me kind and caring. They always said I was mean and ill-natured!” said Rose.

Mina replied, “You might be that before, Rose, but you have changed! Through the time we had together, I was glad to see that you became kinder each day and you cared about me. You are willing to be my friend, even though I am a ghost and different from you. Try doing the same for other people and you will have lots of friends before you know it.”

When the time came, Mina went to Heaven, and Rose was really sad. She felt that she had lost her only friend and she was all alone again. One day, she was wandering around in the park that she and Mina had visited before. She remembered the good times they had together. She missed her friend dearly and started to cry. Several girls saw her crying and came to talk to her.

“What’s wrong, ma’am? Are you okay? Do you need some help?” asked one of the girls.

Rose was about to yell at them to leave her alone when she suddenly remembered what Mina had told her. She gave it some thought and said, “I’m okay, girls. Thanks for asking. I am just sad because my only friend has left and I am all alone. I figured that from now on, no one will care about me and I have no one to talk to.”

Rose then told the girls about Mina and their friendship. Of course, Rose did not tell them about Mina being a ghost, as she did not want to scare those sweet girls away. She told them about how she was all lonely before and was mean to everyone. She told them the good times she had with Mina. She also told them about the conversation with Mina and how she wanted to change and be nice to other people. In the end, she told them how she wanted to make some new friends but didn't know how to start.

“Wow, great story! I see how much you like your friend. You must be devastated now! If you don’t mind, I can be your friend. My name is Jenny,” said one of the girls.

“I am Carrie and I can be your friend too,” said another girl.

“Me too! I am Leila,” another girl chimed in.

“Don’t forget about me! My name is Amanda. How are you?” replied the last girl in the group.

“Thank you very much, girls! You are all so kind and sweet. I wish I could be like you when I was young! Then I would have some friends to talk to and hang around with,” replied Rose.

“Now is not too late! You have us now and you can certainly count on us to keep you company,” said the girls.

Rose was happy that she had met Jenny, Carrie, Leila, and Amanda. She truly appreciated that the girls took the time to talk with her and comfort her. At the end of the day, the girls walked Rose home before they returned to their homes. From that day on, they visited Rose almost everyday to make sure Rose is okay. Rose is kind, loving, and caring to the girls. She is like a grandmother to the girls and they become best friends quickly. They help her move on from Mina, and she is happy again. Rose still remembers Mina and misses her dear friend, but she becomes less sad about her leaving as time goes on. She now understands what Mina had taught her and she is grateful for her dearest friend. Rose becomes kinder and more caring with each passing day and she makes many more friends. Finally, the fairy is pleased with how Rose has changed and acted, so she decides to lift the curse. Thus, Rose can no longer see ghosts and has many new friends.

The Mystery of Lacaux: Part 7

By: Hazel Buckingham

These animals were fast, too fast. The rest of the day went by quickly, and soon the three boys were bedded down for the night. As Daniel looks up at the sky he notices how impossibly clear it was, the stars so bright you could’ve sworn this was the way the night sky looked as it had at the beginning of time. Eventually morning came, and the three friends set out again going farther inland. The trees grew farther and farther apart until they completely opened up to a blanket of rolling hills with one ginormous lake feeding a river that was slowly but surely making its way to the ocean. It was a sight to behold, the grass a bright green, the lake a sparkling cerulean, and the sky a pale blue scattered with fluffy clouds, but the picturesque atmosphere wasn’t the most beautiful thing about this grassland, it was the animals grazing the land. There were majestic unicorns roaming the land, griffons, hippogryphs and even pegasi soaring through the sky and even some rare non-magical animals like the elegant white elk trotting through the hilly land. “Well we know your theory was correct now,” said Carl with wonder echoing in his voice. All Eustace and Daniel could was nod absently, they were still entranced by the beauty of these foreign animals. They all just stood there for a while taking it in, and it was a lot to take in. Finally Daniel broke the silence by saying, “Well, what now?”

Unconventional Sea Creatures: Red-lipped Batfish

By: Princewill Onyebuchi

Also known as the Galapagos Batish, the Red-lipped Batfish is yet another unique creature of the deep. Its scientific name is Ogcocephalus darbini. A rare fish species out of 450 kinds of batish of an odd size found in the waters of the sea near the Galéses and near Peru in South America. The red-lipped batfish are populated way below  the surface of the water and are commonly found under rocks or on the floors of the ocean. They are closely related to other kinds of bait fish but entirely exclusive to the Galappages. The ranges surrounding the Galapago are 3 to 76m in the Pacific Ocean.

Whereas some scientists think that a large, almost neon lip made up of a golden bark would enhance the fish's attractiveness is uncertain. The terrifying face of crimson batfish is not therefore the only characteristic that adds to this fish's distinctive adaptation.  Even under the Galapagos criterion, the island has the most fauna and flora in the world and has influenced the popular Darwinian Theory of Evolution.

Besides the red lips, the rest of the body is a shade of brown that works to camouflage the fish. Also, the batfish is a passionate swimmer that enjoys using their firm pelvic and pectoral wings to walk on the sandy ocean floor. Luckily, this fish has no need for speed to be fed.

The bent face complimented by the long-oiled nose of the batfish can suggest the fish doesn't influence its surroundings, but rather it is either lonely or wild and is only looking forward to his next feeding. The adult red-lipped batfish grows up to around 25 cm, so around 10 inches, but thankfully they don't display a lot of interest to hunters. They  travel to the sea for many years by traveling in the seas of Galapagos.

National Nurses Week

By Annika Watkins

Every year, the United States dedicates a week to honoring and celebrating our nation's nurses. While a week is far too short to honor the amazing work that nurses do on a daily basis, LMH Health is excited to honor National Nurses Week from May 6 to 12. We all recall this time last year with great clarity. In a time of such confusion, we paid careful attention to the news and our healthcare institutions as we waited for more detail. We were unable to celebrate Nurses Week last year with the sweet treats and community festivities that we had planned. Instead, our nurses had to deal with stressful situations, some of which included much longer hours, tears, and community air hugs for warmth. This year's Nurses Week theme is Frontline Warrior. The pandemic has made nurses' week a little more difficult to commemorate. However, there are still ways to pay tribute to nurses. You may send a thank-you note or even a gift to a nurse who assisted you. Alternatively, if you prefer video, you can make a thoughtful or humorous video to share with a nurse who has had a positive impact on your family. You can mail your letter, gift, or video to the facility or hospital where you were treated. Recognizing nurses' accomplishments will go a long way toward improving morale. It's possible that the in-person celebration will have to be postponed. You may, however, hold a virtual awards ceremony with the entire leadership team. It goes a long way to show a nurse how much you value them. Writing a thank-you letter by hand could give a nurse the extra push they need to keep going forward throughout the pandemic. The good news is that writing a thank you note doesn't have to be expensive. All you'll need is some good stationery, a notebook, an envelope, and a sense of honesty. Set aside time to reflect on why their contributions are so important to the team and what they bring to the table.

Top 5 Most Played Instruments in the World

By: Cassandra Conde

Does anyone here know how to play any instruments? Here you will find out the top five played instruments all around the world. So . . . Let’s get started!

#5: Bass Guitar

The bass guitar is a really easy instrument to learn. It is also the instrument that keeps a song steady with the beat just like a drum. I think that even if it is a guitar its basis work is much more closer to a drummer than a guitarist.

#4: The Drums

Speaking about the drums, the drum is the top 4 played all around the world. As you can tell, drums are a very important instrument also to maintain the beat of the song. Playing the drums is also fun because while playing a beat you can also lose yourself in the music.

#3: The Violin

The violin is considered one of the most beautiful sound producing instruments in the world. Many children also start playing this instrument when they are six. The violin has been around since the 16th century.

#2: The Piano

The piano is the most popular instrument around the world.  In America alone, there are about 21 million people who play it. It is probably because the piano is an all-around instrument and it can also be played in any genre.

#1: The Electric Guitar

Well, before the piano used to be number 1, but now the electric guitar is top one! For one, there’s the popularity of pop and rock and roll artists and music.

Dance

By Mikayla Cheng

Dance is a really fun hobby and talent that many people enjoy doing. Dance is usually something people do along with music in an open space. Sometimes, people can perform different dances for an audience. Other times, it can be like a competitive sport. Or it can simply just be a fun activity to enjoy. Dance is actually a very expressive form of entertainment. Dancing can help you let out usually positive emotions, such as happiness, enjoyment, and contentment. It is also a very nice form of releasing your energy. In general, dance just has to do with moving your body around.

Some of the main categories of dance include ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop. Ballet is usually a graceful kind of dance. You hold onto bars, and do stretches and poses with your legs, feet, arms, and hands. Eventually, you will move off the bar and start doing dances while balancing on your toes. Jazz is a dance that usually has to do with keeping your balance and staying in sync with the music. Tap dancers have shoes with metal like soles on them. When they hit the ground when the feet are moving, the metal plates make a tapping sound, as per the name. Hip hop is a very energetic form of dance. It’s a very free and lenient type of dance. Although there are more than just these forms of dances, dance is just a very entertaining activity over all, and I highly encourage you to try it sometime!

May the Fourth Be With You

By: Joshua Lee

Today is an unofficial, yet celebrated by many, holiday. Star Wars Day. It’s a celebration of the works of George Lucas’s works of his media franchise. It first popped up on May 4th, 1979, as a political congratulation to the newly elected prime minister of the United Kingdom. The sign said, “May the fourth be with you.” It is a pun going off of the Star Wars saying that is said often in the series. After that, it began to pop up all over the place. From disney, to the UK Parliament, and even the International Space Station.

Ways to celebrate this fun holiday include watching a Star Wars Trilogy, reading some Star Wars books, or just imagine your own story about it. There are three trilogies, including the prequels (I - III), the originals (IV - VI), and the sequels (VII - IX). If you’re a Star Wars fan, you probably have something planned to do for this festivity. Whatever it may be, have fun and enjoy. As a wise Yoda once said, “May the Force be with you.”

Coral Reefs

By: Valeria Fuentes

The burning of oil and coal, among other human activities, is causing the world to warm over time. This is because burning these fuels produces "carbon dioxide," a gas that traps heat in the atmosphere, or the gaseous layer that covers the earth. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has an effect on life on Earth, as it warms the climate and the oceans. The rainbow colors of many coral reefs are turning white as a result of a warming ocean, a tension indicator known as "bleaching." Some corals, on the other hand, are doing the exact opposite. Instead, they're turning bright green, yellow, purple, or blue. Jörg Wiedenmann is the director of the Coral Reef Laboratory at Southampton University in the United Kingdom. He said he'd seen images and heard stories of this brightly colored coral. Despite this, no one knew what was going on. As a result, his lab staff conducted an experiment. They deliberately stressed corals in order to examine these unusual colors. In July 2020, his team reported their findings in a scientific journal. To comprehend coral, you must first realize that it is not a single creature. Rather, it's a collaboration between two living beings. The coral, an animal, makes up one-half of this pair. It is called symbiosis. The algae live within the coral, which provides them with food and shelter. In exchange, the algae assist them in keeping their mutual home safe. Photosynthesis provides oxygen to corals as well. Plants and some algae use this mechanism to obtain food from sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. The algae, on the other hand, left the coral skeleton when the scientists placed it in warm water in the lab. The algae, on the other hand, left the coral skeleton when the scientists placed it in warm water in the lab. In the real world, this is also what causes bleaching. But, as the scientists discovered in their experiments, something else occurs from time to time. Since there was no algae to absorb light, most of it bounced around within the coral. The corals responded by producing neon-colored substances, according to the researchers. The compounds, which are known as "pigments," act as a natural sunscreen. Those vibrant areas seemed to be leading the algae back to their original location. Algae returned quicker to the bright pink-colored regions, according to Wiedenmann. Those algae were also significantly more efficient at photosynthesis. According to Wiedenmann, the flashy neon colors only appear when tension levels are minimal. Corals can't survive if it's too hot. However, if you see corals blinking neon colors, that's a positive sign. Those corals are hitting back, and they're struggling to keep being noticed by their algae partners.

The Mystery of Lacaux: Part 9

By: Hazel Buckingham

“Nothing,”Eustace said, “We can’t let the ‘company’ know about this.”

“What?” Carl said, “Why would we do that?”

“We don’t have enough information,” Eustace said, “I don’t trust the ‘company’.” No one really understood what Eustace was saying but Daniel and Carl nodded their heads.

“Where do we go, though?” Carl said, “We have absolutely no way off this island.”

“We should probably explore the island a bit, I mean we’ll probably never see it again right?” Eustace says.

“Yeah,” Daniel says, “I guess so.” So that’s what they did, for about two weeks the three friends went every which way on the island leaving no rock unturned. No one could begin to describe the sights, the ginormous lake so clear you could see the sand at the bottom and the fish swimming through it, the desert area where the sand dunes turned every color of the rainbow in the sun's rising and setting, especially the forest area that they had first seen with it’s majestic white elks and endangered species, even the magical creatures that they had seen in those rolling hills. It was like a whole world compressed into one island. That doesn’t mean it was small though; this island was huge. It took at least a week to walk from shore to shore. At least half of the time they took to explore was spent walking. As all things must, their expedition around the island soon ended and they had to find a way to get home.

May the fourth be with you! Many Star Wars fans know that Tuesday, May 4th is a special day. It is an unofficial holiday called Star Wars Day! On it, there are many activities fans like to do. Some devoted Star Wars fans dress up as their favorite characters (for example: Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, Jedi Knights, Rey, ect,). There are also Star Wars movie marathons that play every single Star Wars movie in order. They can also watch series that are in the Star Wars universe like the Mandalorian (which is on Disney +). In addition to this, LEGO has many Star Wars themed sets where you can create your own Millennium Falcon, Death Star, or other sets. Finally, some fans can eat and drink Star Wars style. They can try and recreate some iconic Star Wars food, like the “blue milk.” It is a really fun and exciting day for Star Wars fans, but how did it start?

The Star Wars Day saying, “May the fourth be with you,” is a play on words from a line by Obi-Wan Kenobi. In Star Wars movies, one of the most popular and well known lines is “May the Force be with you.” “May the fourth be with you” got popular when, in 1779, a British Conservative party placed an ad in an English newspaper when Margaret Thatcher took office. The ad stated, “May the fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations.” In addition to Star Wars already becoming very popular on its own, this made it more well known worldwide! Star Wars Day has a very interesting origin and fans can celebrate this amazing movie series with many fun activities. Happy Star Wars Day and may the Force be with you!

Archaeologists Unearth Biggest City to Date in Egypt

By: Claire Wallerstein

Ancient Egypt is widely known for its shining palaces and prosperous timeline in the ancient world. The Ancient Egyptian civilization still has many cities unbeknownst to archaeologists. Zahi Hawass was exploring around the area where the city was found in hope of finding a temple for King Tut. Instead, however, he stumbled upon the biggest Ancient Egyptian city to date. Betsy Bryan, a professor of Egyptian history at John Hopkins university said this is the second most important discovery since King Tut’s tomb. The city discovered is believed to have been called So’oud Atun, or Rise of Aten. Aten was the sun god. The city was most likely built during the reign of  Amenhotep III, when Egypt was very prosperous. He was the ninth pharaoh of the 18th dynasty. He ruled during the second half of the New Kingdom. His son, King Akhenaten lived here briefly before founding Amarna.

In So’oud Atun, there have already been many artifacts worth noting. Rings, pottery, and even ovens have been found in the houses. One house even had a fully preserved human skeleton. There were three sections of the city: The cooking section, likely used to cater to people, the industrial section, and the residential section. Rise of Aten was a planned city that was most likely one of the richest of its time. Archaeologists have found mud bricks bearing the pharaoh's seal, casting molds for amelets, and other pieces used to build a temple. So far, Hawass says only a third of the city has been explored, and more treasures are near, so he was particularly excited for the challenge.

Playoffs Are Soon!

By Kate Spertzel

Playoff season is coming up for the NBA! We have exceptional teams in both the east and west conference. This is a very exciting season for many people (mainly basketball fans. Because of covid they had to make the season a bit longer so they made a Play-In Tournament. It is like a wild card spot where four teams compete to be in the play offs. There are six spots guaranteed playoffs and four Play-In Tournament qualifiers.

The top six for the east are the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, New York Nicks, Atlanta Hawks, and the Miami Heat. The Play-In Tournament qualifiers for the east are the Boston Celtics, the Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers, and the Washington Wizards. The top six for the west are the Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, LA Clipper, Dallas Mavericks, and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Play-In Tournament qualifiers are the Portland Trail Blazers, the Golden State Warriors, the Memphis Grizzlies and lastly the San Antonio Spurs. This is for right now. The standings could always change. You can watch them on channels like ESPN.

Basketball is such an exciting sport and I am really excited for the playoffs. Watching and even playing basketball is a great pass time, especially when you are waiting to be able to see people in a regular manner again. I would really encourage you to try watching basketball. And maybe if you like it you could join me in watching the playoffs.

The Mighty Dog Poem

By: Dean Hwang

Whose dog is that? I think I know.

It’s owner is quite happy though.

Full of joy like a vivid rainbow,

I watch him laugh. I cry hello.

He gives his dog a shake,

And laughs unter her belly aches.

The only other sound’s the break,

Of distant waves and birds awake.

The dog is small, mighty and deep,

But he has promises to keep.

After cake he has a lot of sleep,

Sweet dream come to hime cheap,

He rises from his gentle bed,

It's peanut butter with lots of bread.

Ready for the day ahead.
